The Catholic blogosphere has been aflame lately with the hot debate about the actions of Lila Rose.\u00a0 While no one criticizes her targeting of Planned Parenthood, many are attacking her methods.\u00a0 How can good come from a lie?\u00a0 They ask.\u00a0 If Satan is the Father of Lies, can a believer use deception in the service of God?<\/p>\n

The questions are interesting, and I have been following the debates back and forth.\u00a0 Those on both side argue theology and back themselves up with the Catechism.\u00a0 There is so much hand wringing over this question, and yet no one has looked for answers in the Bible.\u00a0 The unasked question is not \u201cCan God bless a deception?\u201d but \u201cHas God blessed such deception before?\u201d<\/p>\n

He has.<\/p>\n

In the book of Judges (Chapter 4), the Israelites are at war with the Canaanites.\u00a0 In the midst of a great battle the Canaanite general, Sisera, looks for safety in the tent of Jael, and Israelite woman.<\/p>\n

\u201d \u2018Come in, my lord, come in with me; do not be afraid.\u2019\u00a0 So he went into her tent and she covered him with a rug.\u201d Judges 4:18\u00a0 Jael made him to feel safe and protected.\u00a0 She promised to stand watch for his enemies.\u00a0 She made sure that he was comfortable\u2026.right up until she drove a tent spike into his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cThus on that day God humbled the Canaanite king, Jabin, before the Israelites\u201d Judges 4:23<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Later, in the book of Judith, God again uses the guile of women to defeat his enemies.<\/p>\n

When the forces of the Assyrian army laid siege to Judea, it was the widow Judith<\/a> who God sent to defeat his enemies. \u00a0 She took off her mourning clothes, and dressed herself as a courtesan.\u00a0 She set out to win victory for her people, not with the sword, but with deception.<\/p>\n

She prayed to God, \u201cBy guile of my lips strike down slave with master, and master with retainer.\u00a0 Break their pride by a woman\u2019s hand.\u201d Judith 9:10\u00a0 and \u201cGive me a beguiling tongue to wound and kill those who have formed such cruel designs against your covenant\u2026\u201d Judith 9:13<\/p>\n

And God did.\u00a0 He delivered Holofernes, the Assyrian general, into her hands.\u00a0 She killed him with his own sword and returned to her people.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I understand the concern of many about the deceit used in the videos made by Lila Rose in her efforts to bring down Planned Parenthood.\u00a0 I\u2019m made uneasy by it myself\u2026and yet\u2026..\u00a0 In the past, God has used the guile of women to bring down seemingly unconquerable enemies.\u00a0 He has blessed their actions and saved his people.<\/p>\n

I do not believe that this is a case of the ends justifying the means.\u00a0 I believe that it is a woman doing the task which God has placed before her, using the gifts she has been given to complete that task.<\/p>\n

Lila is our modern day Judith.\u00a0 She has disguised herself as their ally. She has found herself welcome in their midst.\u00a0 She has seen the evil of the opponent up close.\u00a0 She has placed herself in the care of the Almighty as she walks amongst His enemies.\u00a0 She has made sure that they feel safe with her and then like Judith, she is slaying them with their own sword.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
