I was on the phone this afternoon with one of the grandmothers in our family.\u00a0 The third time I cleared my throat and winced, she asked what I was doing for my obviously sore throat.<\/p>\n
\u201cHot tea, lozenges and stuff to dry me up,\u201d I told her.<\/p>\n
\u201cWrap your left sock around it.\u201d She told me.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t sure I had heard her correctly so I asked her to repeat herself.\u00a0 \u201cMy grandmother always told me to take off my left sock and wrap it around my neck when it hurt.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know that it did anything, but it couldn\u2019t hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n
I wasn\u2019t wearing socks at the time, so I got an old pair out of the laundry.\u00a0 After staring at them for a minute or two, I decided that I couldn\u2019t tell right from left and put them both on my neck.\u00a0 Which is the point at which my eldest daughter walked through the door and looked at me as if I had lost my mind.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy throat hurts,\u201d I lamely explained.\u00a0 She rolled her eyes and walked away.<\/p>\n
It got me thinking of all the crazy things our grandparents have tried to get me to do in the name of health.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m sure there were others that I have blocked from memory in order to forget the trauma of reliving them.\u00a0 I tell the Computer Guy that our family was a little bit country, and I don\u2019t think he believes me\u2026.but I\u2019ll bet he also never had to run from a grandma chasing him with rabbit fat.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
