#6 is 16 months old, and until last week his entire vocabulary consisted of one word, \u201cmama.\u201d\u00a0 When he first piped up and said my name, I was thrilled.\u00a0 Most kids say their dad\u2019s name first.\u00a0 That\u2019s okay because it\u2019s easier to say, but I was delighted that this child asked for me by name.<\/p>\n
Until I realized that everything was \u201cmama\u201d\u2026the dog, his father, the TV\u2026<\/p>\n
For 7 months this has been his only word.\u00a0 I was beginning to worry that this one might not be so bright in that looking-for-trouble way that moms do,\u00a0 His Oma laughed at me and said, \u201cLeave the boy alone.\u00a0 His life is too good.\u00a0 What does he have to talk about?\u00a0 When he has something to say then he will.\u00a0 Until then, be patient.\u201d<\/p>\n
Life must be pretty good for the youngest in our family, because he has had nothing to say.\u00a0 He smiles at our goofy attempts to get him to speak.\u00a0 Our repetitions make him laugh and pat our cheeks.<\/p>\n
Earlier this week, his dad was changing his diaper and used an ice cold wipe on his little behind. (They got left in the car and were pretty chilly.)\u00a0 #6 yelped at the shock of cold, looked his father in the eye and declared, \u201cI don\u2019t like it.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want it.\u201d\u00a0 just as clear as you please.<\/p>\n
Little snot.\u00a0 All this time we were working on one syllable words and he was figuring out whole sentences.\u00a0 He still is a man of few words.\u00a0 He only trots them out when something is wrong and says thank you when we fix it.\u00a0 That\u2019s my boy.\u00a0 Happy until things go wrong and then he makes sure the right person knows about it.<\/p>\n
