My husband\u2019s grandmother is dying.\u00a0 This isn\u2019t news to us.\u00a0 She\u2019s been dying for a few years now.\u00a0 It just seems to be speeding up and possibly nearing the end at last.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m happy for her.\u00a0 She\u2019s ready to go.\u00a0 \u201cI just miss my Ruben,\u201d she says, when she talks about it (which isn\u2019t often.)\u00a0 It has been over 15 years since her husband died.\u00a0 That\u2019s a long time to be alone.<\/p>\n
Her children are not ready for life without her.\u00a0 She is a wonderful and amazing woman and the hole she will leave in our family will be huge.\u00a0 She is irreplaceable to us and they aren\u2019t yet at a place of admitting the inevitable.\u00a0 They don\u2019t want to even think of life without her in it.<\/p>\n
I don\u2019t really understand it.\u00a0 Death was such a part of life when I was growing up that I don\u2019t find it uncomfortable at all. People died and life went on.\u00a0 My husband\u2019s family is different.\u00a0 They don\u2019t talk about things the way we did.\u00a0 Sickness and death just aren\u2019t topics of conversation they have. They don\u2019t discuss unpleasant things.\u00a0 There may be merit in doing it their way.\u00a0 Their family gets along and mine is a story for another day.<\/p>\n
But I can\u2019t get past the fact that she is dying.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how to pretend anything else.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how to ignore the obvious.\u00a0 For the first time in a long time, I really feel like an outsider in this family.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what the right things are to say, and I don\u2019t know if I could say them if I did.\u00a0 I\u2019m just going to sit here quietly and pray and be secretly thrilled for her.\u00a0 She\u2019s going to see her God and her love.
