This afternoon, we were in a car accident.\u00a0 I was taking #2 and #4 (ages 10 and 6) downtown on an errand.\u00a0 It was raining, but not too hard.\u00a0 We were going about 70 on the highway when the truck in front of us ran over a piece of metal and kicked it up in our direction.<\/p>\n
I had a split second of watching a 3 foot long piece of pipe come flying towards my SUV with no where to move to escape it.\u00a0 I just watched it come at us.\u00a0 3 feet of flying metal at 70 miles an hour.<\/p>\n
It slammed into the grill of the car and we heard a crunch and then the sound of broken glass.\u00a0 My 6 year old shrieked and then started to cry.\u00a0 I calmly and brightly said, \u201cSome big thing just hit the front of the car.\u00a0 We\u2019re all okay, but I need to get off the highway and see if the car is broken or not.\u201d\u00a0 In my head I was thinking \u201cSh\u2013. That hit the grill.\u00a0 Decorative bits are expensive. We just paid off all our bills and have a small emergency fund.\u00a0 This is going to cost thousands to fix.\u00a0 What is our deductible?\u00a0 There goes all our hard work.\u201d<\/p>\n
I called the Computer Guy, who was on the way to a job site a few hours south, and said, \u201cI got hit by flying metal which some car in front of us kicked up.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know the extent of the damage.\u00a0 I\u2019ll call you back when I do.\u201d<\/p>\n
There was silence on the phone and then he replied, \u201cDid you get the other guy\u2019s tag number?\u201d<\/p>\n
WTF?!? \u201cNo, I was too busy watching the huge metal thing flying at us.\u201d<\/p>\n
Is this a man thing?\u00a0 Every guy I talked to today asked the same first question, \u201cDid you write down his tag?\u201d\u00a0 They all just assumed I was okay since it was me calling and not the cops.\u00a0 Women are different.\u00a0 They want to know how you are and then hear the details.\u00a0 Men want to know about the car.<\/p>\n
The mechanic whistled when he saw the damage and said, \u201cif you\u2019d been driving a shorter car or been a few feet back, you\u2019d be dead now.\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s a former EMT and has seen his share of nasty crashes.\u00a0 I\u2019ll take his word for it.<\/p>\n
Today was the first time in a long while in which we prayed for a safe journey as we left the house.\u00a0 I had a nagging feeling we would need the help and less than 10 minutes later we did.\u00a0 We\u2019ll be going to Mass tomorrow morning to say Thank You, but you can bet we\u2019ll be praying for safety before we even leave the driveway.<\/p>\n
P.S. The car will be fine.\u00a0 It has a busted headlight and some loose trim which the mechanic easily popped back on.\u00a0 The total in repairs will be less than $100.\u00a0 Do you know what a relief that is?\u00a0 Do you know how blessed we feel tonight?<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
