This morning by happy accident (no one could find the 3 year old\u2019s shoes until past the time for us to leave) we ended up at the local TLM chapel instead of our regular Novus Ordo parish.\u00a0 We have friends who are regular parishioners there, and have attended Mass there on rare occasion in their old church.<\/p>\n
I grew up in the early post-Vatican II era.\u00a0 I can remember the time before people held hands during the Our Father.\u00a0 I was a small girl when the Communion rails were removed from our church and the old ladies shook their heads and cried.\u00a0 I was 11 when girls were allowed to serve at Mass.\u00a0 The late 70s and early 80s were an interesting time to be a Catholic.\u00a0 Things were changing all the time, and most of the Catholics I knew were eager to embrace the changes.<\/p>\n
I never saw a Latin Mass until a few years ago.\u00a0 I never knew how much I missed it.\u00a0 The folksy, friendly and welcoming atmosphere of most N.O. was exactly what I wanted.\u00a0 There was a familiarity there.\u00a0 I got to participate<\/i> in everything which was going on in the church.\u00a0 I sang, followed along, gave the appropriate responses, and prayed with the rest of the congregation.\u00a0 Most Sundays that is enough for me.\u00a0 I love the Mass.<\/p>\n
Today\u2019s Mass was a different experience altogether.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been before.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how I missed the silence.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how I missed the calm and the peace. Before the Mass, there was no talking at all.\u00a0 No chatting, just respectful silence and a swiftly moving line of penitents at the Confessional.\u00a0 (There was Confession <\/i>before Mass.\u00a0 Not <\/i>at 3:30 on a Saturday and only for half an hour, but before<\/i> Mass began)<\/p>\n
Once the processional began, I realized that, to my delight, nothing was required of me but to pray.\u00a0 The squirmy baby in my arms usually distracts me as I try to follow along.\u00a0 Today I just prayed.\u00a0 The Mass washed over me in a soothing stream of Latin.\u00a0 The chanting of the priest was met by the soaring voices of the choir.\u00a0 The boys at the altar were serious about their duties and yet obviously joyful in the doing of them.\u00a0 The whole of the Celebration was as smooth and as beautiful as a well-rehearsed dance.\u00a0 I watched it all in appreciation, and then bowed my head and prayed.<\/p>\n
All week long, I have to talk.\u00a0 My voice and direction are required.\u00a0 Silence is a rare commodity for me.\u00a0 I never realized how much I value it until I went to the one place where my voice is not required, is not expected.\u00a0 How refreshing that was to me.\u00a0 How rejuvenated my spirit felt to spend just one hour at rest.\u00a0 I had never thought of speaking the responses and singing the songs as one more chore, but at the end of a long hard week, it was so welcome to not have to give them. <\/p>\n
After Mass, there were no loud voices in the sanctuary.\u00a0 People knelt quietly in prayer and then left in silence.\u00a0 The chatting and greeting was left for the vestibule.\u00a0 The prayers of others were strictly respected within the walls of the church.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t seen such respect since I was a young child at my grandmother\u2019s church.<\/p>\n
I don\u2019t know when we will be back at St Damian\u2019s.\u00a0 The Computer Guy was not as enamored as I was.\u00a0 He likes it just fine, but to him Mass is Mass.\u00a0 To me, it was a wonderful surprise, a welcome break.\u00a0 I was at the one place in the city where nothing is asked of me, nothing is required.\u00a0 I got to simply rest in the presence of God and allow Him to enter in and take my fatigue away.\u00a0 What a pleasure and a gift such peace is.\u00a0 How did we ever let it get taken away?<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
