This afternoon was dedicated to potato salad, hot German potato salad.\u00a0 I love it, and could easily eat the entire bowlful myself.\u00a0 For this reason, I only make it when I\u2019m taking it somewhere else. It\u2019s one of those delightful recipes\u00a0 which begin \u201cbrown a pound of bacon.\u201d\u00a0 How can anything be bad which begins with a whole pound of bacon?<\/p>\n
When the bacon perfume wafted from the kitchen to the rest of the house, #2 came wandering in looking for food and an audience.\u00a0 He eyed the plate of meat, swiped a strip and then sat down to discuss politics and religion.<\/p>\n
\u201c#1 told me that Jewish people can\u2019t eat bacon,\u201d he began.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s right.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShe said that Muslims don\u2019t eat it either.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYup.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIs that why they fight all the time?\u201d<\/p>\n
I stopped for a moment and looked at him.\u00a0 \u201cIs bacon<\/i> the reason they fight?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah, you know.\u00a0 They don\u2019t like each other anyway, so neither one wants to go first, but you know that bacon smells good.\u00a0 They\u2019ve got to want to try it, but they don\u2019t want to look weak.\u00a0 Maybe they\u2019re just angry that the other guy is holding out so long.\u201d<\/p>\n
I laughed at his 10 year old logic. \u201cI think it\u2019s more complicated than that.\u00a0 It has to do with ethnicity and religion as well as deep-seated hatred.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSo we should just pray for them?\u00a0 We should pray for their conversion.\u00a0 If they were all Catholic then they wouldn\u2019t have to fight each other and they would get to go to Heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n
I assured him that he was correct, only God could fix the mess in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think we should still try the bacon, though.\u00a0 Just think how happy they\u2019d be to have something to go with their eggs and toast.\u00a0 They could lay down their guns and pick up their forks.\u00a0 Peace Through Pork.\u00a0 Imagine that.\u201d<\/p>\n
