Sew Infertile<\/a>, a first time mom-to-be, asked a bunch of questions on my last post.\u00a0 It was too much to get into in the com box, so I\u2019m answering it here.\u00a0 As always, I\u2019m not a medical professional, just a seasoned veteran.\u00a0 If you think I\u2019m wrong, have something to add, or just want to holler \u201cAmen!\u201d please feel free to do so.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nSo do you need an iv if you think an epidural is going to be needed. \ud83d\ude42 It\u2019s my first and I don\u2019t expect to go into this thinking I\u2019m going epidural free with not knowing what to expect. \ud83d\ude09 I\u2019m going to go as long as I can but am prepared for whatever happens, happens.<\/span>
If you are getting an epidural, then you have to have an IV.\u00a0 If you are a wienie about them (like me), then ask them to put it in your foot.\u00a0 By ask I mean, insist that it go in your foot.\u00a0 The epidural will numb you from the waist down.\u00a0 Your foot is part of that \u201cdown.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nI like the epidural man.\u00a0 I think I\u2019ve offered to have a few of his babies just to show my gratitude.\u00a0 Nobody hands out medals for pain.\u00a0 If you want an epidural, get one.\u00a0 If you want to experience the wonder that is an unmedicated birth, I wish you godspeed.\u00a0 You are a tougher broad than I am. <\/span><\/p>\nWhat about that gooey stuff they put on the babies eyes. I\u2019m vain, personally I hate the way it looks, I know, is it needed. \ud83d\ude42 I know vanity, vanity, vanity. \ud83d\ude09<\/span>
The baby needs the goop.\u00a0 They can wait a bit to give it to him.\u00a0 They can put it on his eyes while you hold him.\u00a0 Wipe off the excess.<\/span><\/p>\nApparently, you don\u2019t need this.\u00a0 (See comments)\u00a0 I have medical history which makes it a good idea for us.\u00a0 Check with your doctor\/midwife for recommendations. <\/span><\/p>\nDo they give the baby sugar water or something I heard and that is not necessary?<\/span> This varies by hospital.\u00a0 If you want to know the answer, ask.\u00a0 I never let my babies out of my sight, so there is no sugar water.\u00a0 I also insist on leaving 8 hours after birth.\u00a0 I like my own house. My experience of what goes on after birth may not be the norm. <\/span><\/p>\nIf a <\/span>night in the nursery<\/span> is okay then would a bottle through the night be okay if you are ultimately going to breastfeed? I just don\u2019t know what to expect so I guess being prepared for it all is good.<\/span>
The La Leche League ladies may hunt me down for this, but a bottle in the nursery won\u2019t hurt anyone.\u00a0 Your milk supply won\u2019t come in for\u00a0 a day or two after birth.\u00a0 One bottle wouldn\u2019t upset me, but two would.\u00a0 With two or more you\u2019re affecting supply.<\/span><\/p>\nHow painful is it? I mean is it the worse pain you have ever felt. I had stage IV endo for years and that was hell and then the surgery and bowelresection were I think the pit of hell. It was painful.<\/span>
It hurts.\u00a0 A lot.\u00a0 The good news is that the better shape you are in, the easier it is.\u00a0 Not easy, but easier.\u00a0 I\u2019ve had 3 with drugs, 2 without, and a c-section.\u00a0 None of them were so terrible that I decided not to have more babies.<\/span><\/p>\nI hear at least you get breaks from contractions as you don\u2019t with endo? <\/span>Contractions rise and fall like a wave.\u00a0 You\u2019ll get breaks.\u00a0 The breaks will get smaller the closer you get to delivery.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\nI hear of a lot of episiotimies (sp?) when are they necessary? I really would like to avoid that at all cost. \ud83d\ude09 hahaha<\/span> That is a matter of big debate.\u00a0 Very large babies can tear their way out.\u00a0 (ouch!)\u00a0 Some doctors think an incision is easier to repair.\u00a0 Both hurt.\u00a0 Ask for warm compresses for the perineum while you are in labor<\/span>.\u00a0 I\u2019ve heard good things about perineal massage to stretch things out.\u00a0 I\u2019ve never tried it, but it couldn\u2019t hurt to look into it.<\/p>\nDo I need someone to teach me how to breastfeed like a lacation cosultant. Do they have those at the hospital or do I have to find one? Can I read a book?<\/span> Yes, you can read a book.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have one to recommend.\u00a0 My babies and I have always figured it out on our own.\u00a0 Most people figure it out.\u00a0 If you can\u2019t, the lactation consultants are good, but don\u2019t know everything.\u00a0 If you need more help, call La Leche or ask an experienced mom. <\/span><\/p>\nI hear the first few weeks your nipples hurt and it\u2019s painful. Is that normal, should it be painful? <\/span>It can be painful.\u00a0 It should not be excruciating.\u00a0 They may crack and bleed.\u00a0 They should not get infected and pus filled.\u00a0 Hot showers help.\u00a0 The cream they give you in the hospital helps.\u00a0 Knowing that it is temporary helps.\u00a0 The sight of that sweet face helps the most.<\/span><\/p>\nI hope I\u2019ve answered them all with the information you were needing.\u00a0 Please email me if you need more help, information, or moral support. <\/span><\/p>\n
