A Facebook acquaintance of mine posted the other day that she and her husband \u201chave decided to start trying to have a baby.\u00a0 Cross your fingers for us!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Ick.<\/p>\n
I don\u2019t understand this new trend in announcing the intention to begin trying to conceive.\u00a0 It\u2019s the same thing as saying \u201cmy husband and I are going to be having a lot of sex in the near future.\u201d\u00a0 What am I supposed to say to that?\u00a0 I hope it\u2019s good for you?\u00a0\u00a0 It just all seems too private, too personal to be telling anyone, and unbelievably too private for the strangers on Facebook.<\/p>\n
I suppose it is all a symptom of the contracepting culture in which we live.\u00a0 \u201cBeing responsible\u201d and taking the Pill is the sign of mature femininity, so going off of the Pill and having \u201cunprotected\u201d sex has become the ultimate symbol of a committed relationship.\u00a0 What a wedding used to be, the \u201ctrying to conceive\u201d announcement has become.\u00a0 In a wedding, a woman dedicates her life to her husband.\u00a0 With this announcement, she finally offers him her uterus.<\/p>\n
Is this some new sort of etiquette which Emily Post needs to address?\u00a0 A new line of Hallmark cards for the socially adept to send?\u00a0 How would they even word that?\u00a0 If we should offer our congratulations to the couple who decides to conceive, should we send a note of condolence to the couple who just \u201cisn\u2019t ready yet\u201d?\u00a0 This is yet another symptom of our reality show, me-centered culture.\u00a0 Nothing is private any more, not even the love of a husband and a wife.<\/p>\n
There are things I just don\u2019t want to know about people.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to know your sex schedule, I don\u2019t want that mental image of you.\u00a0 Call me when the test is positive and I will rejoice with you.\u00a0 Tell me when it\u2019s not and I\u2019ll pray with you, but don\u2019t tell me during the middle of it.\u00a0 There really are some things I don\u2019t need to know about you, and what you\u2019re doing in the bedroom is one of them.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
