Last night, I watched a movie with my husband,\u00a0 which of course means that he put something on the TV that we both watched over the top of our laptops.\u00a0 Side by side, him working and me chatting on Facebook.\u00a0 It\u2019s the new romance.<\/p>\n
I IM\u2019d for a while with an old boyfriend from college.\u00a0 He thinks of me as the one that got away and I think of him as the bullet dodged.\u00a0 He\u2019s a nice guy, but it would not have ended well.\u00a0 I knew that at the age of 18 and put an end to it while we could still be good enough friends to, 17 years later, chat on Facebook.\u00a0 He\u2019s now the divorced father of two boys and dating a 22 year old.\u00a0 I think his life is kinda sad.\u00a0 I\u2019m the married mother of 6 children.\u00a0 He thinks my life is insane.<\/p>\n
He teased me for a bit about all of those babies and said, \u201cIf I had married you, my mother would love you.\u00a0 She wants more grandbabies. But I tell her that 2 is all she gets from me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou never know.\u201d I told him.\u00a0 \u201d The right girl could come along.\u00a0 You could remarry, and she could convince you to have more babies.\u00a0 Think how happy your mama would be.\u201d\u00a0 (Isn\u2019t it sad that the 22 year old chippy living in his house isn\u2019t even a consideration in his future plans?\u00a0 He freely admits that she\u2019s Miss Right Now.)<\/p>\n
He went on to tell me that he was never having another baby.\u00a0 They\u2019re too expensive.\u00a0 How were we going to send all of these children to college?\u00a0 \u201cThe Computer Guy and I paid for ourselves to go to college.\u201d I answered.\u00a0 \u201cYou appreciate most what you earn for yourself.\u00a0\u00a0 We\u2019ll help, but they have to do it themselves.\u00a0 One word.\u00a0 Scholarships.\u201d<\/p>\n
He was unconvinced and then stated flat out that it was impossible to give enough love and attention to that many children.\u00a0 I laughed out loud.\u00a0 How many were too many to love, I asked.\u00a0 \u201c7\u201d he replied.
We argued good naturedly back and forth a bit more.\u00a0 Neither of us giving an inch, but enjoying the sparring.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
\u201cYou should have been a lawyer.\u201d He told me at one point.\u00a0 \u201cYou almost have me convinced that you\u2019re not crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI should have been a lot of things,\u201d I told him, \u201cbut this is what I\u2019ve chosen.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat is your profession? Breeding?\u201d He asked sarcastically.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d I told him. \u201cI\u2019ve chosen to be the Mother of Nations. We will populate the Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n
I could tell he didn\u2019t get it, so (being the nerd I am) I did a little math for him.\u00a0 \u201cIf our children have babies at the same rate that we do, you will have 4 grandchildren and I will have 36.\u00a0 If we keep it going you will have 16 great-great grandchildren and I will have 1296.\u00a0 A few more generations and my decedents can touch every corner of the globe.\u201d<\/p>\n
There was a long pause on his end, then he wistfully replied, \u201cI would have liked to have had a little girl.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
