**Last week I wrote about a miracle.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t a tale I could tell then, now it is.**<\/span><\/div>\nI got a phone call last week from my dear friend, the woman in the white minivan. She was laughing.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\u201cMy husband\u2019s great aunt called me this morning,\u201d she said.\u00a0 \u201d She told me, \u2018I\u2019ve done something naughty.\u00a0 I know you said that you had accepted that you would have no more babies, but I just this morning finished a novena to St Anne for you.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nI caught my breath.\u00a0 My sweet friend has battled infertility for the whole of her married life, conceiving her only child through medical help which was nothing short of heroic.\u00a0 She has grieved for this and put it behind her.\u00a0 She has moved on.\u00a0 Had this reopened that painful wound?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\u201cAre you okay?\u201d I asked her.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019re laughing, so I\u2019m hoping it\u2019s \u2018that\u2019s ironic and funny\u2019 laughter and not \u2018that\u2019s still the most painful thing ever laughter.'\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\u201cNo,\u201d she told me.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s neither one.\u00a0 Half an hour before she called I found out that for the first time in my life, after 14 years of marriage, I\u2019m spontaneously pregnant.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nThose novenas must be powerful stuff, so don\u2019t mess around with them unless you\u2019re serious.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\nBut tell the truth, if you were her best friend and had cried with her through the heartbreak for 9 years, wouldn\u2019t you be shouting from the mountaintops and whispering on your blog, too?\u00a0<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"**Last week I wrote about a miracle.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t a tale I could tell then, now it is.** I got a phone call last week from my dear friend, the woman in the white minivan.
