The book, titled \u201cIt\u2019s Never Wrong to Do the Right Thing,\u201d collects stories Mullen describes as examples of people who made \u201csmall decisions\u201d that yielded \u201chuge blessings\u201d and, she said, \u201chave had ripple effects throughout the millennia.\u201d The chapters aim to encourage readers, particularly women, to \u201cstep up to the plate, to be counted, to say yes to God, to say yes to his ways and his right paths,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Mullen, whose career spans contemporary Christian music and worship ministry, said the seed for authorship was planted about 20 years ago.<\/p>\n
\u201cYears ago, probably back in 2005 \u2026 we were in Uganda, and this guy in the lobby, he came, and he just started prophesying to me,\u201d she recalled. \u201cHe was saying, The Lord was going to eventually change my name to \u2018author,\u2019 and I would write all these books.\u201d<\/p>\n
At the time, the idea seemed implausible. \u201cI said to my manager at the time \u2026 I can\u2019t think of not one book I want to write. It was just so far fetched.\u201d Over the next two decades, she said, that impulse grew into what became the book\u2019s collection of biblical reflections and contemporary testimonies.<\/p>\n
Mullen also recorded an audiobook, a process she described as unexpectedly personal and difficult.<\/p>\n
\u201cI love reading now, but somehow or another, those old voices were trying to attack me again, and so I found it to be a little more laborious than I had expected,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Ultimately, she said, the project felt like an offering that was multiplied by grace. \u201cI gave him my loaves and my fish, and he said, Watch me multiply into something that\u2019s going to help people.\u201d<\/p>\n
The book is meant to be practical and pastoral, Mullen said, pointing readers to Scripture as the foundation for moral choices. \u201cI think we really have to know what the word says in order for us to make the right decisions and live a righteous life,\u201d she said. \u201cI can\u2019t live a righteous life if I don\u2019t know what right is.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mullen emphasized the book\u2019s focus on often-overlooked biblical figures she calls \u201cshe-roes,\u201d and on the ways ordinary acts of obedience can influence future generations. She credits elders in her own family \u2014 \u201cmy grandmother and my grandfather, my mom and my dad\u201d \u2014 with modeling decisions that shaped her faith even amid personal missteps.<\/p>\n
Those missteps, Mullen said, have informed her view of ministry and accountability. She urged a posture of measured judgment and abundant grace toward fellow ministers and believers.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are called at one point to a higher standard, because we are in front of the people,\u201d she said. \u201cHowever, I believe we are called \u2026 to make it right as soon as possible.\u201d At the same time, she said, \u201cI want to give the same grace to other people \u2026 not grace to the sin, but grace to the person that I\u2019ve received.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mullen spoke candidly about personal failings early in her career and the role of redemption in her life.<\/p>\n
\u201cBack in the day, when I was singing background for different artists, \u2026 in my 20s, I got pregnant out of wedlock. I needed the same grace of God,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m proof of God taking, sometimes a faithless and him flexing and showing his faithfulness.\u201d<\/p>\n
Music, she said, remains central to her ministry and identity. Her most recent album, released last year, is a musical rendering of Psalm 91 titled \u201cWar Songs.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe latest album I put out was last year, and it\u2019s called \u2018War Songs,\u2019 and it\u2019s all of Psalm 91,\u201d she said. \u201cI did a companion of that in Hebrew, a companion of it in chichiwa, which is from Zambia, and a companion of that same album in French.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mullen said she continues to balance speaking, singing and writing. \u201cWhen I go out to speak, I still sing. And when I go out to sing, I still speak,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s still you\u2019re getting Nicole C Mullen.\u201d<\/p>\n
Addressing recent controversies that have shaken parts of the Christian music world, Mullen urged humility and reform without wholesale condemnation of ministry leaders.<\/p>\n
\u201cAny of us that are on a platform singing and ministering to you, we\u2019re still in need of the same grace, and we\u2019re in need of redemption that you are,\u201d she said. \u201cWe really haven\u2019t arrived. \u2026 I consider my own self a work in progress. I feel like I should wear a hat that says I\u2019m under construction.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mullen said church leaders and artists should \u201csay that deed was wrong\u201d when misconduct is exposed, while avoiding a posture that seeks to condemn beyond accountability. \u201cI\u2019m not allowed to judge in a way that condemns someone,\u201d she said, explaining that repentance and restoration are ultimately in God\u2019s hands.<\/p>\n
The book was published by David C. Cook\u2019s Esther Press and is available in print, Kindle and audiobook formats. Mullen said she hopes its stories will fortify readers facing what she described as a \u201cscary and sometimes dark world,\u201d and will inspire \u201ccourageous decisions\u201d grounded in scripture and compassion.<\/p>\n
\u201cI believe my part is to help infuse the saints to be able to do just that,\u201d she said, adding that the testimonies in the book are intended to encourage \u201cmen and women to be who God has called us to be.\u201d<\/p>\n
