{"id":149,"date":"2011-09-28T04:11:41","date_gmt":"2011-09-28T08:11:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/reeligion\/?p=149"},"modified":"2011-09-28T10:07:53","modified_gmt":"2011-09-28T14:07:53","slug":"the-kuleshov-effect-and-the-godfather","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/reeligion\/2011\/09\/the-kuleshov-effect-and-the-godfather\/","title":{"rendered":"The Kuleshov Effect and The Godfather"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Last week in my film studies class, I showed portions of <a title=\"The Cutting Edge\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Cutting-Edge-Magic-Movie-Editing\/dp\/B0009PVZEG\/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1317177448&amp;sr=8-6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>The Cutting Edge: The Magic of Movie Editing<\/em><\/a>, including a brief overview of montage theory and a recreation of the so-called Kuleshov Effect.\u00a0 <a title=\"Lev Kuleshov wiki\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lev_Kuleshov\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Lev Kuleshov<\/a> was a Russian filmmaker in the 1910\u2019s and 20\u2019s who created an incredibly short but incredibly influential piece of film.\u00a0 In it, Kuleshov cut from a shot of a well-known actor (<a title=\"Ivan Mozzhukin - Wiki\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ivan_Mozzhukhin\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ivan Mozzhukhin<\/a>) to a bowl of soup.\u00a0 He cut again back to a repetition of the same shot of Mozzhukhin, and then another cut to a young girl on a funeral bier, back to the same shot of the actor, cut to a scantily-clad young lady, and then back to the actor.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4gLBXikghE0?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Even though the shot of the actor is identical in each juxtaposition, the audience\u2019s interpretation of the actor\u2019s emotional outpouring is changed.  The audiences were said to have \u201craved about the acting\u201d in the sequence.\u00a0 Even though I know the truth of the identical shots of the actor, I still think he looks hungrily at the soup, sorrowfully at the dead girl, and lustfully at the lady.<\/p>\n<p>Today in class, as I was showing an example of parallel editing from <em>The Godfather<\/em> (the baptism\/assassination scene), a student pointed out that Michael\u2019s facial expression becomes darker and darker as he renounces \u201cSatan,\u201d \u201call his works,\u201d and \u201call his pomps.\u201d  <em>I<\/em> said, \u201cYeah, what a great actor, huh?\u201d  And another student pipes up and says, isn\u2019t that just like the guy with the bowl of soup and the dead daughter?  I mean, is it the acting or is it the cutting?\u201d \u2026 I hadn\u2019t thought of that.<\/p>\n<p>See for yourself.  You should, of course, watch the whole scene (you probably won\u2019t be able to help yourself), but the real Kuleshov-effect-in-question bit begins around 3:40 into this clip.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Sokkp7NA8NA?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Well? Is it the acting, or it the cutting?
