A look at the Abrahamic Paradigm of \u201cCalled and Sent\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

\"BRUgemannIn his book, \u00a0The Word That Redescribes the World: The Bible and Discipleship,<\/a>\u00a0Walter Brueggemann does an excellent job articulating that\u00a0the God that calls people to follow him also sends them on mission<\/strong>.\u00a0God calls individuals and communities to love him and to obey his governance over all things, and then sends these individuals and communities to proclaim the Kingdom of God.<\/p>\n

As I reflect on what Brueggemann has written, I am deeply encouraged\u00a0to create a missional community\u2013 filled with people who have heard the call and have obeyed the command to go \u2013 that will proclaim to the world through our \u201cwalk\u201d and our \u201ctalk\u201d that God is King, and, therefore, life as we have known it (with all its brokenness, injustice, and oppressive regimes) can now be transformed into the flourishing that God intends for his Creation.<\/p>\n

Brueggemann looks at Abraham and Moses in the Old Testament and Jesus and his early followers in the New Testament to demonstrate how God operates through this \u201cCall and Send\u201d blueprint. Today, we\u2019ll look at Abraham.<\/p>\n

Abraham<\/strong> is the paradigm of God\u2019s missional call and missional mandate to humans. God called Abraham away from his settled life in Ur. \u201cThe LORD\u00a0had said to Abram, \u2018Go from your country, your people and your father\u2019s household to the land I will show you\u2019\u201d (Genesis 12:1<\/a>). Brueggemann points out that with this command to go, \u201cAbraham is propelled into an orbit of reality that completely preempts his life, and removes him completely from any purpose or agenda he may have entertained for himself before that moment\u201d (p. 93).<\/p>\n

Abraham\u2019s call immediately was followed by being sent by God on his mission. Not just any mission, but, as Brueggemann states, \u201cThe sending of Abraham (and Sarah) is perhaps\u00a0the overarching missional dispatch in all of Scripture\u201d (p. 96). The dispatch: \u201cThrough you all peoples on earth will be blessed\u201d (Genesis 12:3<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Brueggemann states that Abraham\u2019s call and mission to be a\u00a0\u201cblessing\u201d is central to understanding God\u2019s mission in this world.\u00a0\u201cBlessing is that the world should be generous, abundant, and fruitful, bespeaking effectiveness in generative fertility, material abundance, and this-worldly prosperity. Perhaps the best way to speak of this mandate is to think of \u2018shalom\u2019 in the broadest scope. Israel\u2019s life is to make the world work better according to the intention of the creator. That is the immense mission given to this one man and his family!\u201d (p. 96).<\/p>\n

God\u2019s intention for the world is for\u00a0Shalom<\/strong>. I have long loved Cornelius Plantinga\u2019s definition of\u00a0Shalom: \u201cWe call it peace, but it means far more than mere peace of mind or a cease-fire between enemies. In the Bible, shalom means universal flourishing, wholeness, and delight\u2026, the webbing together of God, humans, and all creation in justice, fulfillment, and delight.\u00a0Shalom, in other words, is the way things ought to be.\u201d (Not the Way It\u2019s Supposed to Be: The Breviary of Sin<\/a>, p. 10)<\/p>\n

Abraham\u2019s mission\u00a0flows through the People of God in the Old Testament, is brought to fulfillment in Jesus Christ and thus\u00a0becomes the mission of today\u2019s People of God, the church.\u00a0Abraham\u2019s call and mission in Genesis 12 is the hinge of God\u2019s mission, \u201cso that the general condition of curse in the world is turned to a general condition of blessing, life, and well-being.\u201d This, then, is the mission of all those who are \u201cAbraham\u2019s seed\u201d (Romans 9:8), i.e., the people of who name Christ as Lord.<\/p>\n

As a pastor, my work needs to align with this Abrahamic paradigm \u2013 calling people into relationship with God and into his mission to\u00a0\u201cgo\u201d into a new way of life, one that completely preempts the normal American life\u00a0\u2013 an intentional life that sets aside our purposes and agendas for the sake of God\u2019s.\u00a0As a community, we are called to God\u2019s mission of bringing\u00a0Shalom\u00a0into every nook and cranny of his creation, doing our part in reversing the curse so that every person can experience God\u2019s blessing.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
