The previous post reminded me of one of the funniest videos on the internet: Star Wars retold by someone who has never seen it. If you have never seen this, watch it, and you will laugh out loud… I know it’s a few years old, but I’m guessing that there are probably people who have never seen it, and some who won’t mind seeing it again. Read more

Those of us who teach are aware (or should be aware!) of the relevance of prior knowledge to education. One of the things I wrestle with most is the fact that, in the same class, I may have students who have never read the Bible before ever, and some who read it regularly for devotional purposes. It is a challenge to make the class intelligible and interesting to both sorts of students and the range of others who find them... Read more

Nick Norelli posted an entry on his blog about sacrificial worship, connecting it with James D. G. Dunn’s book Did the First Christians Worship Jesus? and also with my own book, The Only True God. Nick questions whether animal sacrifice was the sine qua non – but doesn’t clarify the sine qua non of what, leaving his point somewhat obscure. But as far as my own views on the topic, animal sacrifice was the form of worship which par excellence... Read more

If you mention Iowa to the average person, particularly at the moment, and they will probably think of this… If you mention Iowa to a Trekkie, the first thing that they will probably think of is this… HT Marc Cortez for the second image. Read more

IO9’s article on dramatic works that should be performed in sci-fi languages reminded me of an activity I did once in a class on religion and sci-fi, getting students to “translate” (in actual fact, imagine they are explaining) a passage from the Bible or other Scriptures to someone from another planet. It provides an interesting opportunity to consider whether there could be concepts so foreign that no translation would be possible, or that any translation either would not make sense... Read more

Rick Perry offers unimpressive “answers” to a child’s questions to him about the age of the earth and evolution. I bet that the child could answer them! (HT Jim West) Larry Moran shared his explanation of why evolution is a fact and a theory. Irenicum shared the evolution vs. creationism song: See too Tom Verenna’s post on creationism and climate change denial. And finally, Jesus Needs New PR shared this church sign – can anyone find out if it is... Read more

Joel Watts, inspired by Rodney, posted the following: During the first week of October, I would like to host a carnival or sorts on mythicism. I would like two ten-minute presentations, pro and con. They must be a video of some sort. No, you don’t have to be on the camera, and yes, you can just make an audio recording and turn it into a video of a powerpoint for all I care. These videos will be uploaded to a... Read more
