<\/a><\/div>\nThis\u00a0made me think of\u00a0the scene I was told about from the show Wizards of Waverly Place<\/em>, where Alex knows that \u201cTom Sawyer\u201d is a song by Rush but doesn\u2019t know it is a book. And it also made me think about this chart Jen McCreight shared<\/a> about what young people today know about evolution.<\/p>\n There\u2019s a cultural gulf between anyone who is a professor today and incoming students, although it is bigger for some than for others. And however corny some of these lists are, there never fails to be something on them that really surprises me.<\/p>\n

<\/a>But one thing I\u2019ve been emphasizing a lot in recent weeks as I\u2019ve been involved in workshops and summits on teaching and technology is this: today\u2019s students may be \u201cdigital natives\u201d but they don\u2019t know how to use the technology they take for granted to find reliable information. And so even if a professor happens to be a \u201cdigital immigrant,\u201d we have skills to teach to students. They may use technology to search for information that was once science fiction for us. But sifting through the results to discern what is credible is something that computers cannot do yet, and\u00a0few students today know<\/em> that computers don\u2019t rate search results by reliability. And so there\u2019s still something for us to teach them!<\/div>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/7622297540113836091-6462182405966834903?l=exploringourmatrix.blogspot.com\")
