But they grew to the point where they seemed to require a post of their own.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nearemmaus.com\/2012\/12\/19\/the-massacre-of-the-innocents-did-it-happen-and-does-it-matter\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Brian LePort joined the conversation<\/a> between Tony Jones and myself about the story of the slaughter of the innocents in Matthew\u2019s Gospel. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allanbevere.com\/2012\/12\/the-massacre-of-innocents-smackdown.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Allan Bevere<\/a> also did so. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/tonyjones\/2012\/12\/20\/james-mcgrath-may-be-funnier-than-me-but-hes-still-wronger\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">now Tony Jones himself has responded<\/a>, acknowledging that I am <em>funnier<\/em> than he is, but nevertheless insisting that I am <em>wronger<\/em>. (UPDATE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/slacktivist\/2012\/12\/20\/power-vs-love-in-the-christmas-story\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Fred Clark has also joined the conversation<\/a> with a long thoughtful post on a variety of aspects of the subject. So <a href=\"http:\/\/whoisrobdavis.wordpress.com\/2012\/12\/21\/why-is-most-philosophy-and-theology-so-boring\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">too<\/a> have\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/whoisrobdavis.wordpress.com\/2012\/12\/20\/the-theologian-who-lost-his-way\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rob Davis<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/cultivare\/2012\/12\/holy-innocents-and-the-birth-of-jesus\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Kyle Roberts<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Let me respond by saying that I think Tony is right that, since the infancy stories offer us little in the way of history, a narrative and theological approach to them is the most useful (<a href=\"http:\/\/blue.butler.edu\/~jfmcgrat\/jesus\/newmoses.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">here is a link to some earlier thoughts of mine on that topic in class notes I posted some years ago<\/a>, as well <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2012\/09\/lecture-on-the-infancy-stories-in-matthew-and-luke.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">one to<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2012\/09\/lecture-on-the-infancy-stories-in-matthew-and-luke.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">a more recent video of a class I taught on the infancy narratives<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>I remain relieved that I do not feel bound to adhere to Matthew\u2019s theology any more than his history. It is precisely because of the seriousness with which I take the deaths of the innocent that I find myself unable to think of God in the anthropomorphic way that many Christians still do, as though God were organizing and planning every event that unfolds.<\/p>\n<p>But I appreciate and agree with Tony\u2019s point that we should not adopt a stance of smug chronological superiority, as though things that we write and say will not offend people thousands of years from now, if anyone actually reads them.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever one thinks of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/jesuscreed\/2012\/12\/21\/from-the-shepherds-nook-weeping-with-newtown\/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+PatheosJesusCreed+%28Blog+-+Jesus+Creed%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew\u2019s story<\/a>, whether as <a href=\"http:\/\/experimentaltheology.blogspot.com\/2012\/12\/strangers-in-strange-land.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">theology<\/a> or as history, we don\u2019t need it in order to reflect on the deaths of innocent children. We have plenty of modern examples that can serve just fine as a basis for reflection, unfortunately.<\/p>\n<p>On a <a href=\"http:\/\/zwingliusredivivus.wordpress.com\/2012\/12\/20\/law-v-francesca-the-virgin-smackdown-2012\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">somewhat related note<\/a> (about another <a href=\"http:\/\/zwingliusredivivus.wordpress.com\/2012\/12\/20\/john-barton-enters-the-virgin-2012-smackdown-fray\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">issue in Matthew\u2019s infancy story<\/a>), there is <a href=\"http:\/\/zwingliusredivivus.wordpress.com\/2012\/12\/20\/francesca-s-on-the-birth-of-jesus\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a video with Francesca Stavrakopoulou talking about the virgin birth<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/p012w5fr\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">suggesting that the idea arose from a mistranslation<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timothymichaellaw.com\/was-the-virgin-birth-a-mistranslation-stavrakopoulou-fails-to-convince\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Timothy Michael Law suggests<\/a> that the LXX rendering of the verse in Isaiah is not a mistranslation, but rather the term <em>parthenos<\/em> underwent a linguistic shift after the time that translation was made. <a href=\"http:\/\/podacre.blogspot.com\/2012\/12\/nt-pod-64-is-virgin-birth-based-on.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mark Goodacre has now chimed in<\/a> as well and provides the definitive treatment of the <a href=\"http:\/\/otagosh.blogspot.com\/2012\/12\/the-christmas-story.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">subject<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE: <a href=\"http:\/\/unsettledchristianity.com\/2012\/12\/insert-pun-about-the-virgin-birth-my-take\/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+unsettledchristianityblog+%28Unsettled+Christianity%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Joel Watts<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/thebiblicalworld.blogspot.com\/2012\/12\/is-virgin-birth-based-on-bad-translation.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">John Byron<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deepbiblestudy.net\/2012\/12\/is-the-virgin-birth-a-mistranslation\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Henry Neufeld<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/historicaljesusresearch.blogspot.com\/2012\/12\/is-matthews-death-of-innocents-episode.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Anthony Le Donne<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/remnantofgiants.wordpress.com\/2012\/12\/21\/francesca-stavrakopoulous-virgin-birth-and-matthews-mistranslation\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Deane Galbraith<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelsheiser.com\/TheNakedBible\/2012\/12\/virgin-birth-based-mistranslation\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Michael Heiser<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/cryptotheology.wordpress.com\/2012\/12\/21\/the-virginity-of-mary-and-hermeneutics\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Matthew Malcolm<\/a> have chimed in about the above <a href=\"http:\/\/hopefulrealism.com\/2012\/12\/newtown-bethlehem-and-the-dark-side-of-christmas\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">topic<\/a> too. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.postost.net\/2012\/12\/are-immanuel-wonderful-counselor-mighty-god-everlasting-father-prince-peace-same-person\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Andrew Perriman\u2019s post<\/a> on Immanuel and others in Isaiah is also relevant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.redletterchristians.org\/rev-richard-land-greatest-commandment-justifies-deadly-force\/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+RedLetterChristians+%28Red+Letter+Christians%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Richard Land has argued that the Golden Rule leads naturally to owning firearms<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/christianpiatt\/2012\/12\/rev-richard-land-greatest-commandment-justifies-deadly-force\/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+ChristianPiatt+%28Christian+Piatt%27s+Blog%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">No, seriously<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/philosophicalfragments\/2012\/12\/21\/callous-theology-of-james-dobson\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Wehner<\/a> has commented on James Dobson\u2019s callous theology.
