Bill Tai was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/01\/15\/technology\/fortunes-of-facebook-may-hinge-on-searches.html?nl=todaysheadlines&amp;emc=edit_th_20130115&amp;_r=0\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">quoted in the <em>New York Times<\/em> today<\/a> as saying the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When there is too much information, there is high value in search, navigation and discovery.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is why I focus on information and digital literacy skills in my classes.<\/p>\n<p>Several <a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.butler.edu\/content.php?pid=301286&amp;sid=2469060\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">libraries<\/a> have made what is referred to as the \u201cCRAP Test\u201d available on their web sites, and it is a useful guide for students first thinking about these topics:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: xx-large\">The\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">CRAP<\/span>\u00a0Test<\/span><\/h1>\n<h2>Evaluate Sources Based on the Following Criteria:\n<\/h2><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">C<\/span>urrency,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">R<\/span>eliability,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">A<\/span>uthority and\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000\">P<\/span>urpose\/Point of View\n<\/p><ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;font-size: medium\">C<\/span>urrency<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>How recent is the information?<\/li>\n<li>How recently has the website been updated?<\/li>\n<li>Is it current enough for your topic?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;font-size: medium\">R<\/span>eliability<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>What kind of information is included in the resource?<\/li>\n<li>Is content of the resource primarily opinion?\u00a0 Is is balanced?<\/li>\n<li>Does the creator provide references or sources for data or quotations?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;font-size: medium\">A<\/span>uthority<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Who is the creator or author?<\/li>\n<li>What are the credentials?<\/li>\n<li>Who is the publisher or sponsor?<\/li>\n<li>Are they reputable?<\/li>\n<li>What is the publisher\u2019s interest (if any) in this information?<\/li>\n<li>Are there advertisements on the website?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;font-size: medium\">P<\/span>urpose\/Point of View<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Is this fact or opinion?<\/li>\n<li>Is it biased?<\/li>\n<li>Is the creator\/author trying to sell you something?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I was pleased to discover that not only are there <a href=\"http:\/\/libraries.mercer.edu\/tarver\/subject-guides\/tutorials\/images\/CRAPTestImage.PNG\/image\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">poster versions<\/a> of this, but one is a Star Wars version (<a href=\"http:\/\/libraries.mercer.edu\/tarver\/subject-guides\/tutorials\/evaluating-sources\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">courtesy of Mercer University<\/a>)!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-12320\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/files\/2013\/01\/CRAP-test-Star-Wars-poster-small.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"739\" height=\"922\"><\/p>\n<p>That adds to the futuristic feel of what we are now able to do thanks to the internet.
