Given the importance of the caricature of the mad scientist in a lot of science fiction, often used to warn of the dangers of scientists \u201cplaying God,\u201d the cartoon usefully highlights that the caricature does not fit well with the description of the individuals as <em>scientists<\/em>. Some fit, but many more do not. Where the <em>Engineers<\/em> in <em>Prometheus<\/em> fit into this is an interesting question.<\/p>\n<p>I am reminded of the Doctor Who episode \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2012\/02\/doctor-who-the-underwater-menace.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" class=\" decorated-link\">The Underwater Menace<\/a>\u201d in which a \u201cmad scientist\u201d named Prof. Zaroff wishes to crack the Earth into pieces. When <a href=\"http:\/\/news.drwho-online.co.uk\/Two-Lost-Doctor-Who-Episodes-Found!.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">the Doctor asks him why he wants to do that, he doesn't have a good answer<\/a>. If he were a mad <em>scientist<\/em>, an experiment that by definition can yield no results to the scientist ought to be of little or no interest.<\/p>\n<p>In connection with the distinction between mad scientists and mad engineers, let me also note that scientists reject things like young-earth creationism, while some of the key proponents of that sort of nonsense over the years have been engineers. <\/p>\n<p><em>Mad<\/em> engineers, perhaps?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A friend shared this cartoon on Facebook.
