Here is an example of the iconography:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/files\/2013\/02\/Jesus_Glorious_Resurrection_from_the_grave.jpg\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12821\" width=\"480\" height=\"543\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>I was struck by the consistent depiction of Jesus grasping Adam by the wrist, which I assumed symbolized that the entirety of the salvation was accomplished by God, with humanity passively rescued and unable to contribute.<\/p>\n<p>The day before yesterday, in a presentation by a colleague in Classics, I discovered that this gesture (usually referred to by the phrase <em>cheir' epi karpo<\/em>, \u201chand on the wrist\u201d) is particularly associated with weddings in ancient Greek art. Here is an example:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/files\/2013\/02\/wedding-hand-on-wrist.jpg\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12820\" width=\"406\" height=\"472\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>So I wonder whether that symbolism was in view when this iconographic tradition was developed. Is the imagery intended to depict merely that Jesus \u201cabducts\u201d Adam from Hades?
