Today's Bizarro comic<\/a> helps focus attention on the relationship between natural instinct and morality. The natural world is full of behavior that could be considered to run counter to many human systems of moral teaching. We do not expect cats to ask, after catching a mouse, \u201cWhat Would Jesus Do?\u201d \u2013 nor even some feline equivalent\u2026perhaps \u201cWhat Would Aslan Do?\u201d Yet many of the instincts that lead to such behaviors are ones that we share with other living things on this planet.<\/p>\nThis neither justifies nor undermines our human moral systems. Is does not imply ought. But it does help us to understand better the origin and nature of the instincts which we have come to believe we should reflect on, and resist in at least some circumstances. <\/p>\n
