{"id":13865,"date":"2013-04-04T12:45:23","date_gmt":"2013-04-04T16:45:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/?p=13865"},"modified":"2013-04-04T12:45:23","modified_gmt":"2013-04-04T16:45:23","slug":"it-is-written-vs-god-has-shown-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2013\/04\/it-is-written-vs-god-has-shown-me.html","title":{"rendered":"It Is Written vs. God Has Shown Me"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/slacktivist\/2013\/04\/04\/god-has-shown-me-that-i-should-not-call-anyone-profane-or-unclean-no-2\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Fred Clark has an excellent post<\/a> highlighting the contrast between two different outlooks reflected in <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.cc\/acts\/10-28.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Acts 10:28<\/a>, which reads as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile.\u00a0But God has shown me that I should not call anyone impure or unclean.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On the one hand, Peter here is depicted as saying that it is against the Jewish Law \u2013 that is, unbiblical, contrary to Scripture, in violation of what conservatives tend to call the Word of God \u2013 for a Jew to associate with a Gentile.<\/p>\n<p>We can discuss whether this statement is strictly speaking true \u2013 but if it isn\u2019t, that serves as a warning that even Peter, and\/or the author of Acts, could be persuaded that something is unbiblical when it in fact was not.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-13866\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/files\/2013\/04\/Peter-Cornelius-300x274.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"164\">Either way, on the other hand, Peter says that God had persuaded him to contravene what he believed to be the teaching of Scripture.<\/p>\n<p>The contrast is stark, and today\u2019s conservative Christians would expel Peter from their churches for daring to say such a thing, were he to say it today.<\/p>\n<p>The irony is that there are many Christians who emphasize that they are \u201cBiblical\u201d as though that were a good thing, as though by saying that they were providing proof positive of their Christian identity.
