{"id":14952,"date":"2013-06-14T08:38:59","date_gmt":"2013-06-14T12:38:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/?p=14952"},"modified":"2013-06-14T08:38:59","modified_gmt":"2013-06-14T12:38:59","slug":"hebrews-on-earth-as-it-is-in-heaven","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2013\/06\/hebrews-on-earth-as-it-is-in-heaven.html","title":{"rendered":"Hebrews: On Earth as it is in Heaven?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSaPi_sUgTVPeK9PEPwDalQ5h6UVBSYUDyaUK7746ORBpZ6yJq-gg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"137\">I\u2019ve discussed Hebrews a lot lately, since I\u2019ve been working through it in my Sunday school class. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2013\/05\/he-learned-obedience.html#comment-929911421\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">A comment on a recent post<\/a> got me thinking once again about an aspect of Hebrews that continues to puzzle me: How the author can speak about the Son both as a celestial reality that seems to be timeless, and a human being who learns obedience and only attains his exalted status as a result of that obedience?<\/p>\n<p>This is a challenge even (or perhaps especially) when one has the later creeds in view. But the extensive debates that occurred f0r the next several centuries indicate that the end results of those debates were not simply assumed and taken for granted among early Christians. And so what assumptions\u00a0<em>did\u00a0<\/em>this author have that made these statements intelligible?<\/p>\n<p>I wonder whether perhaps the author\u2019s Platonic background can help us make sense of this. Perhaps the author treated the earthly and human as parallel to and a shadow of a fuller celestial reality, and assumed that when Jesus was exalted to heaven, these two realities were merged.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe some who have more background in Plato can chime in on whether this background could clarify the author\u2019s viewpoint? And we might want to discuss whether the idea of a heavenly doppelg\u00e4nger might be relevant in making sense of other texts from the New Testament and its context.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14953\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/files\/2013\/06\/Plato-Class.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"380\" height=\"512\"><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve discussed Hebrews a lot lately, since I\u2019ve been working through it in my Sunday school class.
