Over the show\u2019s long history on television\u2014and in various spin-off TV shows, audio adventures, novels and comic books\u2014religion and religious themes have consistently been a subject of interest. From early depictions of <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Buddhism<\/a> and pagan religion to recent years when the show has attracted everything from Church of England conferences dedicated to its use in preaching to guest appearances by Richard Dawkins, religion has always had some role within the universes of <em>Doctor Who<\/em>. Proposals for 20 minute papers are therefore invited for a day conference on this theme to be held at the historic John Rylands Library at the University of Manchester on November 2<sup>nd <\/sup>2013. Possible subjects include, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Religious or mythic themes (salvation, return, ritual etc.) in the series.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Critiques and deconstructions of religion in <em>Doctor Who<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The use of Doctor Who to chart British religious history from 1963 to the present.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Death and the afterlife in Doctor Who and Torchwood.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The Doctor as a Christ figure.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Portrayals of non-Christian religion in the classic series or BBC revival.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Fan response to \u201creligious\u201d episodes.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The use of Doctor Who by religious organisations.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Religion in audio adventures, comic books and novels.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Canonicity and Doctor Who as a surrogate religion.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Doctor Who as a tool for theological reflection.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Using Doctor Who to teach Religious Studies.<\/p>\n<p>Abstracts should be 250 words in length, and include a short biography of the author. Abstracts should be sent to <a href=\"mailto:DrWhoReligion@gmail.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">DrWhoReligion@gmail.com<\/a>.
