{"id":15957,"date":"2013-07-20T09:45:15","date_gmt":"2013-07-20T13:45:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/?p=15957"},"modified":"2013-07-20T09:45:15","modified_gmt":"2013-07-20T13:45:15","slug":"beyond-jesus-agnosticism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2013\/07\/beyond-jesus-agnosticism.html","title":{"rendered":"Beyond Jesus-Agnosticism"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"http:\/\/dilettante-exegete.blogspot.com\/2013\/07\/jesus-agnostic-mythicist-and-question.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rick Sumner poses some interesting questions on his blog The Dilettante Exegete<\/a> \u2013 during some of which he has an imaginary gun to his head!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-15960\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/files\/2013\/07\/who-is-jesus-230x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"161\" height=\"210\">One that I think is particularly interesting is the question of what one ought to call the stance that there probably was a historical Jesus \u2013 the brother of the James whom Paul mentions meeting in his letter to the Galatians \u2013 but about whom we can say next to nothing, since the Gospel material cannot be used to reconstruct his life with a sufficient degree of probability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJesus agnostic\u201d doesn\u2019t fit \u2013 it better describes the stance of sitting on the fence about whether there was a historical Jesus or not. And Sumner\u2019s proposal of \u201cfunctional mythicist\u201d seems to me to be problematic, since it suggests that the stance is closer to that of the fringe internet viewpoint, when in fact it is a perfectly respectable stance held by mainstream historians and scholars.<\/p>\n<p>So what are the alternatives? I\u2019d suggest that either \u201cBultmannian\u201d or \u201cJesus minimalist\u201d might work.
