But there seems to be an obvious answer: Claire did it, because her \u201cfather\u201d asked her to. Her \u201cfather\u201d Christian Shephard\u00a0who was now himself a manifestation of the \u201cman in black.\u201d And he did this so that he could be freed to then take on the appearance of John Locke, so as to reach Jacob.<\/div>\n

Now if the \u201cman in black\u201d in some sense is<\/em> the \u201csmoke monster\u201d then obviously he\u2019s been able to roam around the island even while the circle around the cabin was intact. But perhaps the ash circle was a means not to preventing his appearance<\/em> elsewhere but a means of constraining his influence<\/em> in some way.<\/p>\nThis theory may be problematic, or it may be on the right track \u2013 I post it here mainly to solicit thoughts and discussions!<\/p>\n

<\/a>We\u2019ve been so focused on the \u201cresurrection\u201d of John Locke this past season, that most fans have failed to connect this with the earlier \u201cresurrection\u201d of Christian Shephard. That the two are parallel or related has been indicated clearly: indeed, taking Locke back wearing Christian\u2019s shoes suggests that Locke\u2019s body being brought to the island is related in some fundamental way to Christian\u2019s body being brought to the island.<\/div>\n
