While Jesus is depicted in both the <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.logos.com\/passage\/nlt\/Luke%2013.1-5#ref=Lk%2013%3A1%E2%80%935%2Chi%3DLk%2013%3A1-Lk%2013%3A5&amp;ver=NLT\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Synoptics<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.cc\/john\/9-3.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">John<\/a> as questioning a simplistic link between \u201cworst suffering\u201d and \u201cworst sinners,\u201d Robertson claims for himself the authority to interpret plate tectonics and thus seems to claim a wisdom and insight (and perhaps even an authority) greater than that of Jesus himself.<\/p>\n<p>Among other Biblical figures whom\u00a0Robertson ignores are<a href=\"http:\/\/bible.cc\/ezekiel\/18-20.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"> Ezekiel<\/a> (who denied that children would suffer for the sins of their parents) and Job (which might lead us to think that perhaps Haiti is being tested because it is so righteous, while\u00a0Robertson is clearly less righteous than Haiti since there is no earthquake beneath him).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.3quarksdaily.com\/3quarksdaily\/2010\/01\/the-first-black-republic.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Other<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/agod-sizedpuzzle.blogspot.com\/2010\/01\/around-web.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">bloggers<\/a> have been <a href=\"http:\/\/io9.com\/5447846\/at-the-center-of-geologic-disaster-humanity-prevails\/gallery\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">addressing<\/a> this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sodahead.com\/religion\/pat-robertson-haitians-brought-it-on-themselves\/blog-236569\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">subject<\/a> since yesterday (I\u2019m sure I\u2019ve missed some):<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.benedictionblogson.com\/2010\/01\/13\/ambassador-raymond-joseph-speaks-truth-to-pat-robertson\/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Benedictionblogsoncom+%28Benedictionblogson.com%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hatian Ambassador responds<\/a>\u00a0(also at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.episcopalcafe.com\/lead\/church_and_state\/haitian_ambassador_responds.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+episcopalcafe%2Flead+%28The+Lead%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Episcopal Cafe<\/a>)<br>Polycarp has blogged about <a href=\"http:\/\/thechurchofjesuschrist.us\/2010\/01\/god-satan-and-the-birth-of-haiti\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the colonial myth that Pat Robertson mistook for fact<\/a>.<br>Steve Wiggins notes that <a href=\"http:\/\/sawiggins.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/14\/theodicy-versus-idiocy\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">in the Book of Job there is also a \u201cpact with Satan\u201d<\/a> but on that occasion it was made by <em>God<\/em>.<br>Scotteriology suggests that <a href=\"http:\/\/scotteriology.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/14\/satan-is-pat-robertsons-theological-mentor\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Satan is Pat Robertson\u2019s theological mentor<\/a>.<br>Dr. Jim wonders <a href=\"http:\/\/drjimsthinkingshop.com\/2010\/01\/13\/what-disaster-will-god-send-to-punish-t-v-land-for-pat-robertson\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">how God will punish Pat Robertson<\/a> for his unbiblical notion of corporate punishment.<br><a href=\"http:\/\/www.episcopalcafe.com\/lead\/theology\/where_was_god_in_all_of_this.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+episcopalcafe%2Flead+%28The+Lead%29\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Peter Carey<\/a> shares <a href=\"http:\/\/www.craiguffman.com\/2010\/01\/where-was-god-in-the-earthquake.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed:+CraigDavidUffman+(Metanoia)\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a post<\/a> asking where God was in all this. Ben Witherington <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/bibleandculture\/2010\/01\/haiti---a-case-study-for-theodicy.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">asks the same question<\/a>.<br>Biblische Ausbildung shares from the perspective of <a href=\"http:\/\/biblische.blogspot.com\/2010\/01\/our-students-from-haiti.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">ones connected with Haiti<\/a>.<br>Wheat among Tares sums it up well: <a href=\"http:\/\/wheatamongtares.blogspot.com\/2010\/01\/ugh.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">ugh<\/a>.<br><a href=\"http:\/\/pastorbobcornwall.blogspot.com\/2010\/01\/pat-robertsons-haiti-curse-more-from.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bob Cornwall<\/a> shares a post by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.religiondispatches.org\/blog\/2189\/pat_robertson_and_the_curse_of_unyielding_ignorance\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Anthea Butler<\/a>.<br>Brian LePort recommends <a href=\"http:\/\/nearemmaus.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/13\/the-earthquake-in-haiti\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">ignoring Robertson<\/a> (among other things).<br><a href=\"http:\/\/christmyrighteousness9587.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/14\/haiti-will-not-die\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Joseph Celucien<\/a> offers <a href=\"http:\/\/christmyrighteousness9587.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/14\/haiti-will-survive\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a poem<\/a>.<br>Missives from Marx suggests that <a href=\"http:\/\/missivesfrommarx.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/14\/pat-robertson-on-haiti\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Robertson is simply repeating the view found in the Bible of God as abusive husband<\/a>.<br>Friendly Atheist notes <a href=\"http:\/\/friendlyatheist.com\/2010\/01\/14\/christians-against-pat-robertson\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Christians who are speaking out<\/a> against Pat Robertson.<br>New Ways Forward suggests that <a href=\"http:\/\/newwaystheology.blogspot.com\/2010\/01\/faithfully-rejecting-faith.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">it might be more faithful to the Gospel to reject it if it comes packaged in the form Pat Robertson offers<\/a>.<br><a href=\"http:\/\/debunkingchristianity.blogspot.com\/2010\/01\/reason-1937-why-i-want-nothing-to-do.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">John Loftus<\/a> links to <a href=\"http:\/\/restlesswanderings.com\/2010\/01\/haiti-it-is-your-fault\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">another blog<\/a> which describes this as yet another reason he wants nothing to do with Christianity.<br>David Sessions <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patrolmag.com\/sessions\/1929\/pat-robertson-wasn-t-hateful-this-time?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+PatrolMagazine+%28Patrol+Magazine+-+All+Sections%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">doesn\u2019t think Pat Robertson\u2019s speech was hateful (this time)<\/a>.<br>Amused Muse relates the tragedy to the question of <a href=\"http:\/\/amused-muse.blogspot.com\/2010\/01\/why-atheism-is-relgion-reason-one.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">whether all beliefs are equal<\/a>.<br>Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/tomorrowstable\/2010\/01\/give_to_haiti.php?utm_source=selectfeed&amp;utm_medium=rss\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">many<\/a> Christian and non-Christian <a href=\"http:\/\/forbiddengospels.blogspot.com\/2010\/01\/tragedy-in-haiti.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">bloggers<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/romanhistorybooks.typepad.com\/roman_history_books_and_m\/2010\/01\/haiti-earthquake-relief-effort-how-to-contribute.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">are<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telecomtally.com\/blog\/2010\/01\/dont_pray_for_haiti.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">mentioning<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/pastorbobcornwall.blogspot.com\/2010\/01\/news-of-faith-based-outreach-to-haiti.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">opportunities<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/kushanasbiblequestionpage.com\/2010\/01\/13\/aid-to-haiti.aspx?ref=rss\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">to<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/wheatamongtares.blogspot.com\/2010\/01\/haiti.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">help<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As for why I threw Solomon into the mix, it is to illustrate in yet another way the problem with claims to believe the whole Bible and take it all literally, which I think Pat Robertson would (falsely) claim as his own perspective. I don\u2019t know any Christian who makes such a claim and who would say that Solomon was wiser than Jesus. Yet that seems to be the clear implication of a literal reading of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Kings+3&amp;version=NIV\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">1 Kings 3:12<\/a>, where God tells Solomon\u00a0\u201cI will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that <em>there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be<\/em>.\u201d And so while it may be that there is no historical evidence to show the superiority of Solomon\u2019s wise and discerning heart to that of Jesus, a true Biblical literalist will nevertheless know and affirm that it is so. <\/p>\n<p>While they are busy with that, the rest of us can focus on more important matters, like showing compassion.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/7622297540113836091-2828271706491894889?l=exploringourmatrix.blogspot.com\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pat Robertson seems to think he is wiser than Jesus.
