{"id":17371,"date":"2013-09-09T14:05:44","date_gmt":"2013-09-09T18:05:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/?p=17371"},"modified":"2013-09-09T14:05:44","modified_gmt":"2013-09-09T18:05:44","slug":"syria-and-the-church","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2013\/09\/syria-and-the-church.html","title":{"rendered":"Syria and the Church"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Today in my Sunday school class, we started off talking about the separation of church and state, and by the end we were talking about Syria. <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/onthesquare\/2013\/09\/syria-should-we-intervene\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Syria<\/a> also came up in the sermon, which was on Psalm 3, the first lament in the Psalter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/files\/2013\/09\/syria.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-17403\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/files\/2013\/09\/syria.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"146\"><\/a>I found my thoughts turning to Syria in one of my classes at Butler University as well, as we discussed one of the readings for that day, which was Clifford\u2019s classic essay \u201cThe Ethics of Belief.\u201d Since most of those of us <a href=\"http:\/\/tamedcynic.org\/syria-what-brian-zahnd-gets-right-that-rachel-held-evans-and-mark-tooley-do-not\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">pondering<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redletterchristians.org\/syria-stuff-one-wants-talk\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">puzzling<\/a> over what is going on in Syria, and what our nation might do in <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.3quarksdaily.com\/3quarksdaily\/2013\/09\/syria-the-case-for-inaction-or-action.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">response<\/a>, are not privy to things like the <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/america.aljazeera.com\/articles\/2013\/9\/8\/german-intelligenceassaddidntapprovechemicalweaponattacks.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">evidence for chemical weapons having been used<\/a>, how do we make a judgment about what has transpired and what we should believe? Clifford\u2019s challenge that we need to test claims for ourselves seems unhelpful in situations in which we have no way of testing them, and neither believing nor disbelieving the claims of others who say they know will be without consequences that lead to loss of life.<\/p>\n<p>Christians in other countries ought to be aware of the situation of\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/slacktivist\/2013\/09\/08\/religious-violence-in-damascus\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">Christians in Syria<\/a>. The <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/melkite.org\/patriarchate\/no-to-foreign-military-intervention-in-syria\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Melkite Patriarch\u2019s appeal<\/a> provides a perspective that needs to be heard. And most will probably be aware that <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/09\/08\/world\/meast\/syria-civil-war\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">an ancient Christian town, which includes one if the rare groups that still speaks Aramaic, is under threat<\/a>. But the stance of Christians in the United States and elsewhere should reflect a Christian commitment to peace, justice, and reconciliation, and not a tribal allegiance to Christianity.<\/p>\n<p>What are some of the best sources of information you\u2019ve found about what is going on in Syria? How do you assess conflicting claims?
