{"id":1973,"date":"2011-09-19T15:05:13","date_gmt":"2011-09-19T19:05:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/community\/exploringourmatrix\/?p=1952"},"modified":"2011-09-19T15:05:13","modified_gmt":"2011-09-19T19:05:13","slug":"mandaean-artifacts-in-the-british-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2011\/09\/mandaean-artifacts-in-the-british-museum.html","title":{"rendered":"Mandaean Artifacts in the British Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Via <a href=\"http:\/\/ancientworldonline.blogspot.com\/2011\/09\/british-museum-collection-database.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">AWOL<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telecomtally.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/british_museum_online_database.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Abnormal Interests<\/a>, many of us had drawn to our attention the fact that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/research\/search_the_collection_database\/search_results.aspx?orig=%2Fresearch%2Fsearch_the_collection_database.aspx&amp;searchText=Mandaean&amp;x=16&amp;y=13&amp;fromDate=&amp;fromadbc=ad&amp;toDate=&amp;toadbc=ad\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the British Museum has made digital images of some of its collections available online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/collectionimages\/AN00742\/AN00742968_001_m.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"138\">I did what anyone would do (well, anyone with my particular interests): I typed in \u201cMandaean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It came up with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/research\/search_the_collection_database\/search_object_details.aspx?objectId=804689&amp;partId=1&amp;searchText=Mandaean&amp;fromADBC=ad&amp;toADBC=ad&amp;orig=%2fresearch%2fsearch_the_collection_database.aspx&amp;numpages=10&amp;currentPage=1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">few<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/research\/search_the_collection_database\/search_object_details.aspx?objectId=1403059&amp;partId=1&amp;searchText=Mandaean&amp;fromADBC=ad&amp;toADBC=ad&amp;orig=%2fresearch%2fsearch_the_collection_database.aspx&amp;numpages=10&amp;currentPage=1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">incantation<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/research\/search_the_collection_database\/search_object_details.aspx?objectid=805224&amp;partid=1&amp;searchText=Mandaean&amp;fromADBC=ad&amp;toADBC=ad&amp;numpages=10&amp;orig=%2fresearch%2fsearch_the_collection_database.aspx&amp;currentPage=1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">bowls<\/a> \u2013 and one object that made me catch my breath.<\/p>\n<p>The object pictured on the right is a flask dated to the first century, and when I saw the snippet of the catalog entry indicating that this is a flask dated to the first century with a Mandaic inscription, I wondered whether this was a mistake, or a find the importance of which had somehow been overlooked.<\/p>\n<p>As it turns out, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/research\/search_the_collection_database\/search_object_details.aspx?objectId=804726&amp;partId=1&amp;searchText=Mandaean&amp;fromADBC=ad&amp;toADBC=ad&amp;orig=%2fresearch%2fsearch_the_collection_database.aspx&amp;numpages=10&amp;currentPage=1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the full entry suggests that the flask is from the first century but the writing on it from the fifth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It would still be worth looking into how the object and the writing on it were dated. But at the very least, hopefully this illustrates <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/research\/search_the_collection_database\/search_object_details.aspx?objectId=804726&amp;partId=1&amp;searchText=Mandaean&amp;fromADBC=ad&amp;toADBC=ad&amp;orig=%2fresearch%2fsearch_the_collection_database.aspx&amp;numpages=10&amp;currentPage=1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the sort of interesting thing you might find<\/a> if you take a look at what the British Library has made available!<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Via AWOL and Abnormal Interests, many of us had drawn to our attention the fact that the British Museum has made digital images of some of its collections available online.
