I disagree with his way of understanding them, and so thought I would write a post in response.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-19906\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/files\/2013\/12\/Jewish-Jesus-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"108\">I regularly tell my students that it is unlikely that these sayings should be understood as meaning \u201cYou heard God say in the past, but I disagree with what God said and have something else to say.\u201d Not only is that unlikely to begin with, but the relationship between the things is not one of stark contrast.<\/p>\n<p>That is when I point out that Greek has different words for \u201cbut.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The one used here is often translated as \u201cand\u201d \u2013 and I think that works best in this context.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, \u201cYou have heard it said \u2018Do not murder\u2019\u2026and I say, do not even get angry\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The relationship is one of digging deeper to the root causes, getting beyond the negatives that one can legislate to underlying attitudes that can motivate positive action.<\/p>\n<p>You have heard from those in the past that these are antitheses.
