I wonder if the hiring of an actor to \u201cplay Jacob\u201d, like the filming of multiple versions of the final scene from last season\u2019s finale, is a ruse, and Jacob is in fact going to turn out to be someone we know well: Jack Shepherd. I wouldn\u2019t bet money on it, not by a long shot, but I can certainly see how such a plot development would make sense.<\/p>\n

If Jack succeeds in detonating a bomb and preventing the incident that leads to the button and leads to the plane crash and so on, then flight 815 never crashes, Jack never ends up on the island, never gets sent back to the island \u2013 and so who detonates the bomb? It would make sense to have Jack end up trapped outside of time and space, caught in a paradox of his own creation, as \u201cJacob\u201d. For all we know, Jack is his nickname and his birth certificate in fact says \u201cJacob\u201d.<\/p>\n

Even if that isn\u2019t what happens in the final season of LOST, I don\u2019t think there is any chance that, if Jack\u2019s execution of Faraday\u2019s plan is successful, then we\u2019ll simply find them landing in LA as they originally planned. History will have been changed, perhaps radically so, and thus we might have to follow the series characters\u2019 lives into a history very different from the one we and they have known thus far.<\/p>\n
