When we get up to the Acts of John<\/a> in my \u201cHeresy\u201d class, I usually have us listen together to Gustav Holst\u2019s<\/a> \u201cThe Hymn of Jesus<\/a>\"\"\u201d op. 37, which is a choral setting<\/a> of the hymn<\/a>\"\" that Jesus teaches his disciples in the Acts of John<\/a>.\n

Below is one of the several<\/a> recordings<\/a> available on YouTube.<\/p>\n

I wish there was one that I could share with you that isn\u2019t segmented into parts. This may work for some of you:

I think it is helpful, in thinking about Gnosticism, for students to try to imagine Gnostic worship. The singing, prayer, and other devotional practices of a religious community are at the heart of its meaning to believers, and not just (or even primarily) the study of texts. I\u2019m not suggesting that Holst\u2019s setting sounds anything like what ancient Gnostics actually sang, of course. But listening to anything \u2013 even a modern setting \u2013 can still be a useful undertaking.<\/p>\n

There are other settings of extracanonical texts that are worth being aware of. Joaquin Rodrig<\/a>\"\"o (famous for his Concierto de Aranjuez<\/a>\"\") set some Qumran<\/a>\"\" hymns, and Alan Hovhaness<\/a>\"\" set some of the Odes of Solomon<\/a>\"\".<\/p>\n

There are also some Mandaean hymns recorded on YouTube, but I have yet to listen very carefully to try to figure out what the texts are.<\/p>\n
