The episode was almost entirely focused on <i>souls<\/i>\u00a0\u2013 whether that of William Bell in Olivia Dunham\u2019s body (and I have to say that Anna Torv does an incredible job of acting the role of someone else in her body \u2013 there were times when it seemed like she was about to burst into laughter, but it may just have been a Leonard Nimoy grin) or that of a woman who, having been struck by lightning, can\u2019t figure out how to get her soul to finally depart her body.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_A5kWE8EKJEQ\/S_aB2lye-8I\/AAAAAAAABTs\/nCEMDQBw3tQ\/s1600\/over+there+part+2+fringe+leonard+nimoy.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"120\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_A5kWE8EKJEQ\/S_aB2lye-8I\/AAAAAAAABTs\/nCEMDQBw3tQ\/s200\/over+there+part+2+fringe+leonard+nimoy.jpg\" width=\"200\"><\/a>From the perspective of someone interested in the intersection and interaction of religion and science, I think this provides an opportunity for reflecting on an important point: the <i>soul<\/i>\u00a0(which was also a major focus on \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Complete-First-Season-Morena-Baccarin\/dp\/B002U0KHME?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;link_code=btl&amp;camp=213689&amp;creative=392969\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">V<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;l=btl&amp;camp=213689&amp;creative=392969&amp;o=1&amp;a=B002U0KHME\" style=\"border: none !important;margin: 0px !important;padding: 0px !important\" width=\"1\">\u201c) has historically been a major focus in science fiction. Even humanistic sci-fi like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Star-Trek-Original-Season-Remastered\/dp\/B000VDDDY6?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;link_code=btl&amp;camp=213689&amp;creative=392969\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Star Trek<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;l=btl&amp;camp=213689&amp;creative=392969&amp;o=1&amp;a=B000VDDDY6\" style=\"border: none !important;margin: 0px !important;padding: 0px !important\" width=\"1\"> has always seemed to have room for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcpc.org\/library\/article.cfm?library_id=944\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">souls<\/a> or katras.<\/p>\n<p>And so I found myself wondering whether this facet of science fiction does not indicate something about people. Science fiction\u2019s writers and fans include a significant number of those who would consider themselves secular, humanist, agnostic, atheist, and\/or skeptic. Yet the soul and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcpc.org\/library\/article.cfm?library_id=946\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">afterlife<\/a> seem to live on in the imagination of this genre. Does this indicate that there is in fact more <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcpc.org\/library\/article.cfm?library_id=943\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">spirituality<\/a> (if not <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcpc.org\/library\/article.cfm?library_id=941\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">religion<\/a>, much less traditional organized religion) in these circles than some would assume?<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fringefiles.com\/gallery\/albums\/episodes\/316\/normal_Fringe316Os-09989.JPG\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"112\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fringefiles.com\/gallery\/albums\/episodes\/316\/normal_Fringe316Os-09989.JPG\" width=\"200\"><\/a><br>Or to put it more provocatively, is science fiction itself typically \u201cspiritual but not religious\u201d rather than secular and purely scientific in character?<\/p>\n<p>It may be highly illogical, but it seems we all want to live long (or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcpc.org\/library\/article.cfm?library_id=942\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">forever<\/a>) and prosper. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/7622297540113836091-1342845250220408336?l=exploringourmatrix.blogspot.com\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I just got caught up on watching Fringe last night.
