It is a slightly more elaborate \u2013 but no more persuasive \u2013 version of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2013\/03\/were-you-there-ken-ham-vs-the-book-of-job.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Ham\u2019s<\/a> infamous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2013\/03\/were-you-there.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cWere you there?\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The irony is that this approach represents an attack on Christianity even more than it is an attack on science.<\/p>\n<p>What kinds of evidence supports evolution? Remnants of past organisms, and the genetic code in those alive today which shows\u00a0our interrelatedness. If such evidence cannot be trusted, then\u00a0the Creator is made out to be a deceiver. But be that as it may, if such evidence cannot be trusted, then the basis for evolution is certainly weakened.<\/p>\n<p>But what kinds of evidence connect Christians with the historical life of Jesus? Texts which were copied and re-copied, with variations between them but from which we can deduce that they stemmed from an original text, a \u201ccommon ancestor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2014\/07\/you-werent-there.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">evidence<\/a> from the past which has survived down to the present cannot be used to draw conclusions, then conservative Christians may indeed score a victory against evolution. But it is a victory against all historical knowledge, including our knowledge about Jesus as a figure who lived in history.<\/p>\n<p>And so conservative Christians have to choose. You can have evidence for Jesus, and for evolution. Or you can have neither.<\/p>\n<p>But pretending that you can keep one without the other is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2014\/03\/historical-vs-observational-theology.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">dishonest hypocrisy of the most despicable sort<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22007\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/files\/2014\/03\/You-werent-there.jpg\" alt=\"You weren't there\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\"><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One popular objection in our time to evolutionary biology is a bogus distinction between observational science and historical science.
