{"id":28455,"date":"2015-02-23T07:06:26","date_gmt":"2015-02-23T12:06:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/?p=28455"},"modified":"2015-02-23T07:06:26","modified_gmt":"2015-02-23T12:06:26","slug":"when-assyria-conquered-israel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2015\/02\/when-assyria-conquered-israel.html","title":{"rendered":"When Assyria Conquered Israel"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Not only students, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/heritage\/episode1\/documents\/documents_12.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">other sources<\/a> regularly refer to Assyria <em>conquering<\/em> Israel in 722 BCE.<\/p>\n<p>This reflects a misunderstanding of the Bible and other evidence.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/faculty.gordon.edu\/hu\/bi\/ted_hildebrandt\/otesources\/00-introduction\/text\/articles\/phillips-historical%20handout.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Assyria<\/a> was already the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cresourcei.org\/othassyrian.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">dominant<\/a> power in the region, and had been for a decade or more. Israel and Judah were vassal states within the territory of the Assyrian Empire.<\/p>\n<p>Then they rebelled, and Assyrian sent in troops to punish the rebellious kingdoms and their rulers.<\/p>\n<p>To talk about this as Assyria \u201cconquering\u201d Israel makes it sound as though Assyria was taking over for the first time. But it wasn\u2019t. It was asserting its control over territories which it already possessed, and which were rebelling, expecting that support from Egypt and from one another would be sufficient to accomplish their aim of throwing off Assyrian rule.<\/p>\n<p>They were wrong.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-28456\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/files\/2015\/01\/wall-relief-of-seige-ramp-battering-ram-at-lachish2.jpg\" alt=\"wall-relief-of-seige-ramp-battering-ram-at-lachish2\" width=\"469\" height=\"237\"><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not only students, but other sources regularly refer to Assyria conquering Israel in 722 BCE.
