Mystics in the Islamic tradition were accused of pantheism, which Richard Dawkins famously declared to be nothing more than \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/2012\/03\/why-be-an-atheist-rather-than-a-pantheist.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">sexed-up atheism<\/a>.\u201d Hume depicts the mystical theist Philo as being accused of atheism in his <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0872204022\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0872204022&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;linkId=MANTHQAD4ILJ5XMX\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important;margin: 0px !important\" src=\"https:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0872204022\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\"><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It is interesting that, when thinkers increase the degree to which God is thought of as truly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jlschellenberg.com\/uploads\/8\/5\/6\/1\/8561683\/god_for_all_time.pdf\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">ultimate<\/a>, transcendent, and infinite, and less anthropomorphically, this is viewed not as a more majestic view of God, but as \u201catheism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I think what this shows is that many theists in fact view God as a being who may be more powerful than others, but differs from them in degree rather than kind. And so one could counter this accusation of atheism in kind with an accusation that such theists are both atheists and polytheists. They are atheists inasmuch as they deny that\u00a0God is the truly ultimate. And they are polytheists inasmuch as they demote God to one being among others.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/marginalia.lareviewofbooks.org\/religion-evolves-patrick-arnold\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Patrick Arnold\u2019s recent discussion of \u201cUltimism\u201d<\/a> in his review of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0199673764\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0199673764&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;linkId=ELOBXAPIWIAWF6XP\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Evolutionary Religion<\/em> by J. L. Schellenberg<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important;margin: 0px !important\" src=\"https:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0199673764\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\"> also touches on\u00a0this topic.<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, while some traditional theists would like to label liberal theists, panentheists, mystics and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=S-V6Li-lG50&amp;feature=em-subs_digest\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">others with these sorts of views<\/a> as \u201catheists,\u201d very often atheists are happy to do the same and claim those individuals as their own, as for instance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/barrierbreaker\/is-obama-an-atheist\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Mosley recently tried to do with President Obama<\/a>. And of course, atheists and conservative religious people are often happy to join forces in labeling those who\u00a0are not conservative as \u201cless faithful\u201d to a religion, as <a href=\"http:\/\/henryneufeld.com\/threads\/2015\/02\/25\/serious-about-whose-faith\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Henry Neufeld recently highlighted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think? Is emphasizing that the ultimate is beyond human comprehension, and beyond human categories like personhood, an expression of atheism? Or is\u00a0Tuggy wrong to suggest that there is a non-naturalistic atheism which can be called ultimism, which renders\u00a0the view of many classic Hindu texts, and of many progressive and liberal Christians and\u00a0Jews, \u201catheism\u201d?
