I think this cartoon shows the problem with viewing prayer – whether to the same deity or a different one – as a way of getting an edge in competitions. What do we really think is happening behind the scenes? Do we imagine one deity or many deciding – whether through combat or on the basis of merit – which of many supplicants shall win, and then inserting the correct spellings of words into their brain, or perhaps confusing the spelling of words in the brains of others?

The cartoon tries to force you to actually picture what is imagined to be happening behind the scenes, and that is a good thing. A lot of really bad theological thought and discourse would probably disappear if people just took the time to think about what they are saying, and what the implications are. But if just thinking about it isn’t enough, then definitely try drawing a cartoon.

From Perry Bible Fellowship.
