{"id":2869,"date":"2010-08-04T11:17:00","date_gmt":"2010-08-04T11:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2010\/08\/imagine-that-and-liberal-arts-education\/"},"modified":"2010-08-04T11:17:00","modified_gmt":"2010-08-04T11:17:00","slug":"imagine-that-and-liberal-arts-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2010\/08\/imagine-that-and-liberal-arts-education.html","title":{"rendered":"Imagine That and Liberal Arts Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Imagine-That-Eddie-Murphy\/dp\/B002S4DNVY?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;link_code=bil&amp;camp=213689&amp;creative=392969\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Imagine That\" src=\"http:\/\/ws.amazon.com\/widgets\/q?MarketPlace=US&amp;ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;ID=AsinImage&amp;WS=1&amp;Format=_SL160_&amp;ASIN=B002S4DNVY&amp;tag=jamefmcgrshom-20\"><\/a><span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;l=bil&amp;camp=213689&amp;creative=392969&amp;o=1&amp;a=B002S4DNVY\" style=\"border-bottom: medium none;border-left: medium none;border-right: medium none;border-top: medium none;margin: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px !important;padding-left: 0px !important;padding-right: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important\" width=\"1\"><\/span>I saw the movie <em><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Imagine-That-Eddie-Murphy\/dp\/B002S4DNVY?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;link_code=btl&amp;camp=213689&amp;creative=392969\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Imagine That<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;l=btl&amp;camp=213689&amp;creative=392969&amp;o=1&amp;a=B002S4DNVY\" style=\"border-bottom: medium none;border-left: medium none;border-right: medium none;border-top: medium none;margin: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px !important;padding-left: 0px !important;padding-right: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important\" width=\"1\"><\/span><\/em> earlier this summer, and I found myself thinking that the movie is in many ways a parable of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quintcareers.com\/marketing_liberal-arts_degrees.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">value<\/a> of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/jobs\/2008\/09\/09\/2008-09-09_true_or_false_a_liberal_arts_degree_is_a.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">liberal arts education<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Although with a fantastical bent, one of the underlying messages of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/media\/rm1001949184\/tt0780567\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the movie<\/a> is that it is those who can be creative, who can bring ideas from other areas into their work in invigorating and unexpected ways, who can appreciate the value of play and imagination, who are most likely to be truly successful in whatever they do in life.<\/p>\n<p>I have heard it said (although I don\u2019t have a statistic to demonstrate it) that, while many business and other vocational majors <a href=\"http:\/\/www.careerbuilder.com\/Article\/CB-415-Getting-Hired-Why-Employers-Like-Liberal-Arts-Grads\/?ArticleID=415&amp;cbRecursionCnt=1&amp;cbsid=da98a1710da2494582164dffb6ce1e81-334235151-wl-6&amp;ns_siteid=ns_us_g_liberal_arts_professi_\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">earn more immediately after graduation<\/a>, those who run the companies they work for are very likely to have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jobweb.org\/studentarticles.aspx?id=748\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">degrees<\/a> in some discipline or domain within the liberal arts. But certainly there is some good <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uni.edu\/reineke\/sellladegree.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">anecdotal evidence<\/a>, just as there is <a href=\"http:\/\/home.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/~pine\/libart\/ceolibarts.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">evidence<\/a> that CEOs value liberal arts graduates.<\/p>\n<p>It is these considerations that also explain the value of getting a vocational degree at a university that has a strong liberal arts component, and not blowing off such core or general education requirements as \u201cirrelevant to my major.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll be teaching a freshman core course this Fall entitled \u201cFaith, Doubt and Reason.\u201d I wonder how useful it is to actually explicitly emphasize some of these points to students. Many, in my experience, have been told that they are getting a degree in order to get a job of a certain sort, and thus should focus on skills, not on \u201cbecoming broadly educated.\u201d I\u2019d be interested to hear what others who are or have been students or professors think about this.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/7622297540113836091-7025344643661059559?l=exploringourmatrix.blogspot.com\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I saw the movie Imagine That earlier this summer, and I found myself thinking that the movie is in many ways a parable of the value of a liberal arts education.
