It might not be that the author was healed in the manner depicted in the story, with this happening during the historical public activity of Jesus, but that the author living in a later time and attributed his\u00a0recovery from blindness\u00a0to Jesus, and\u00a0<span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Adaptation-Superbit-Collection-Jim-Beaver\/dp\/B00005JLRE?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;link_code=btl&amp;camp=213689&amp;creative=392969\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote himself into the story<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;l=btl&amp;camp=213689&amp;creative=392969&amp;o=1&amp;a=B00005JLRE\" style=\"border-bottom: medium none;border-left: medium none;border-right: medium none;border-top: medium none;margin: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px! important;padding-left: 0px! important;padding-right: 0px! important;padding-top: 0px! important\" width=\"1\"><\/span>. <\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve encountered so many different suggestions about who might have written the Fourth Gospel, but\u00a0don\u2019t recall\u00a0anyone having suggested that this nameless formerly blind man in chapter 9 might be responsible. If anyone knows of someone who has made this suggestion, please do let me know.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d also be interested in any treatments of the practice of Greco-Roman authors regarding writing (or refraining from writing) themselves into the story.<\/p>\n<p>An exploration of this topic is unlikely to lead to a definitive answer to the question of authorship. But it might be worth exploring nevertheless, and if it turns up something interesting, it would be poignant to think of the Gospel\u2019s and epistles\u2019\u00a0emphasis on \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+John+1%3A1-10&amp;version=NIV\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">seeing<\/a>\u201d in this light (if you\u2019ll excuse the Johannine pun).<\/p>\n<p>This same group of students has expressed interest in exploring the \u201cJesus on Trial\u201d theme in the Gospel of John by making some \u201cLaw and Order\u201d style videos.
