Better yet, give him none. Let him forget there is such a thing as war. If the government is inefficient, top-heavy, and tax-mad, better it be all those than that people worry over it\u2026Give the people contests they win by remembering the words to more popular songs or the names of state capitals or how much corn Iowa grew last year. Cram them full of non-combustible data, chock them so damned full of \u2018facts\u2019 they feel stuffed, but absolutely \u2018brilliant\u2019 with information. Then they\u2019ll feel they\u2019re thinking, they\u2019ll get a sense of motion without moving. And they\u2019ll be happy, because facts of that sort don\u2019t change. Don\u2019t give them any slippery stuff like philosophy or sociology to tie things up with. That way lies melancholy.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">\u2013 Beatty in Ray Bradbury\u2019s novel <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1451673310\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1451673310&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;linkId=UEB5P77L5HBQ4M33\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Fahrenheit 451<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The quote above is a well-known one, but because of different reading and conversations I was engaged in recently, I suddenly saw its applicability to things like the \u201ccommon core\u201d approach to education, and the eagerness some have to move education \u2013 from elementary all the way through higher education \u2013 in the direction of standardized testing.<\/p>\n<p>The best-case view is that this is simply a misguided attempt to move education in a direction which history, data, and expertise from educational and business fields alike suggests will not accomplish anything good.<\/p>\n<p>But one could take a more sinister view of it, that those advocating this know full well that they are trying to rob the populace of the love for learning, the higher-order reasoning skills, the critical thinking, that makes citizens likely to look closely at, understand, and question what businesses and governments are doing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29776\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/files\/2015\/04\/quote-if-you-don-t-want-a-man-unhappy-politically-don-t-give-him-two-sides-to-a-question-to-worry-him-ray-bradbury-212812.jpg\" alt=\"quote-if-you-don-t-want-a-man-unhappy-politically-don-t-give-him-two-sides-to-a-question-to-worry-him-ray-bradbury-212812\" width=\"527\" height=\"248\"><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cIf you don\u2019t want a man unhappy politically, don\u2019t give him two sides to a question to worry him; give him one.
