It struck me that the phrase that one often hears on radio stations \u2013 \u201cthe greatest hits of the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond\u201d \u2013 could apply equally well to the Bible. It is a compilation of works which were considered to be particularly worth keeping and\u00a0revisiting from a larger number of works written by Christians in this period.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always been the sort of person who dislikes \u201cGreatest Hits\u201d compilations. I prefer\u00a0listening to whole albums. There are a great many songs that I really love, by some of my favorite bands, which were never singles, not to mention some really fantastic music\u00a0on albums that never produced commercial hits at all.<\/p>\n

There is something that is lost when we only know a band\u2019s hits. I\u2019d argue that there\u2019s also something lost when we don\u2019t know the literature that never became a \u201chit single\u201d from ancient Christianity, too.<\/p>\n
