My son, who is in high school, told me that he had looked me up on RateMyProfessor.com.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m sure a worried look crossed my face, but I tried my best to retain my composure. Not a lot of students have commented about me and my classes there. But as is often the case, of the few who have done so,\u00a0most were complaining about something.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently RateMyProfessor.com\u00a0had been mentioned on Reddit today, and anything that\u00a0is featured prominently on Reddit, my\u00a0son spots \u2013 almost but not quite always before I do.<\/p>\n<p>As the conversation progressed, I found myself\u00a0really impressed by his thoughts regarding\u00a0the comments about my classes that he saw there.<\/p>\n<p>One student had written, \u201cI would advise not taking his class because he can\u2019t keep the class discussion going.\u201d Another complained, \u201c<span style=\"color: #505050\">He wasn\u2019t good at stimulating conversation<\/span>.\u201d My son, despite being several years away from university, was astonished by the comments. How, he asked, can students have the audacity to blame the professor for something that is the responsibility of the students themselves?<\/p>\n<p>A conversation that\u00a0began with fear and trepidation on my part ended with a sense of satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>He had a favorite comment about me from the site, and it was this one:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-30308\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/files\/2015\/05\/jolly-leprechaun.png\" alt=\"jolly leprechaun\" width=\"470\" height=\"156\"><\/p>\n<p>Having been reminded about it, I am seriously tempted to make it my Facebook banner. I can live with being described as a jolly leprechaun \u2013 especially by someone who appreciates meaningful discussions about the spirituality and philosophy of science fiction, and who is capable of spelling leprechaun correctly to boot! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had an interesting experience today.
