As a fan of John Williams\u2019 music, I am aware of the old movie \u201cI Passed for White\u201d and blogged about it<\/a> a while back.<\/p>\n

Today there\u00a0has been a prominent news story<\/a> about the reverse situation \u2013 someone who is \u201cwhite\u201d passing for \u201cblack.\u201d Rachel Dolezal, president\u00a0of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) chapter in Spokane, Washington, is apparently listed as \u201cwhite\u201d on her birth certificate, and yet she has identified herself as African-American.<\/p>\n

I hope that most discussions about this will focus on the underlying reason for the issue: that \u201cwhiteness\u201d and \u201cblackness\u201d are not binary categories<\/a>. There is a range of skin colors, and perhaps, just as people are increasingly recognizing the fluidity of gender identities, the time has also finally come for people to recognize that the\u00a0binary categories of \u201cwhite\u201d and \u201cblack\u201d are based on racism and not on the realities of the diverse spectrum of human skin pigmentations.<\/p>\n
