David Lewis\u2019s edited volume <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0826430260\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0826430260&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;linkId=NRNMFU57SVSXKGQ4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Graven Images: Religion\u00a0in Comic Books &amp; Graphic Novels<\/em><\/a> (2010), and Samantha Baskind\u2019s and Ranen\u00a0Omer-Sherman\u2019s editorial work for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/081354775X\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=081354775X&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;linkId=UX7W7TRDDKZX3RCX\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>The Jewish Graphic Novel: Critical\u00a0Approaches<\/em><\/a> (2010).<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #626566\"><em>Sacred Texts and Comics: Religion, Faith, and Graphic Narratives<\/em> is a<br>\nproposed volume for the \u201cCritical Approaches to Comics Artists\u201d series at<br>\nthe University Press of Mississippi that builds upon, but also beyond,<br>\nWestern or \u201cmajor\u201d religious traditions to develop a broader landscape of<br>\nreligious graphic mediums. We encourage submissions that engage Islamic,<br>\nJewish, Christian, Hindu, <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Buddhist<\/a>, Native American, African Diaspora<br>\ntraditions, or other religious communities from a variety of disciplinary<br>\nor cross-disciplinary perspectives. Such critical approaches may include<br>\nstudies in religion, literature, theology, art history, culture,<br>\nanthropology, political science, or other disciplines that work with the<br>\nmulti-dimensional features of graphic narratives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #626566\">Topics may include, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Depictions of the sacred in comics.<\/li>\n<li>The place of historical exegesis and critical, religious interpretation in graphic narratives.<\/li>\n<li>Comics as a form and method of interpretation.<\/li>\n<li>The ways in which the graphic, formal features engage notions of the\u00a0sacred.<\/li>\n<li>The modes by which graphic narratives represent the sacred or<\/li>\n<li>conceptions of religion.<\/li>\n<li>The ways in which religious identity and belief are represented and\u00a0explored in graphic mediums.<\/li>\n<li>The multiple ways that visual culture informs religious practice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"color: #626566\">Please send a 500-1000 word abstract, CV, and contact information to Ken<br>\nKoltun-Fromm (kkoltunf@haverford.edu) and Assaf Gamzou (assaf@cartoon.org.il) by August 21, 2015. Haverford College will host a symposium on \u201cSacred\u00a0Texts and Comics\u201d on May 5th and 6th, 2016 that will include workshops for\u00a0contributors to this proposed volume.
