Sacred Texts and Comics: Religion, Faith, and Graphic Narratives<\/strong><\/p>\n

The last decade has produced critical and expressive studies in sacred
\ncanonical texts and comics. Witness, for example, the artistic works from
\nR. Crumb\u2019s The Book of Genesis<\/em><\/a> (2009) and JT Waldman\u2019s Megillat Esther<\/em><\/a> (2005),\u00a0as well as scholarly publications from Karline McLain\u2019s India\u2019s Immortal\u00a0Comic Books<\/em><\/a> (2009), A. David Lewis\u2019s edited volume Graven Images: Religion\u00a0in Comic Books & Graphic Novels<\/em><\/a> (2010), and Samantha Baskind\u2019s and Ranen\u00a0Omer-Sherman\u2019s editorial work for The Jewish Graphic Novel: Critical\u00a0Approaches<\/em><\/a> (2010).<\/p>\n

Sacred Texts and Comics: Religion, Faith, and Graphic Narratives<\/em> is a
\nproposed volume for the \u201cCritical Approaches to Comics Artists\u201d series at
\nthe University Press of Mississippi that builds upon, but also beyond,
\nWestern or \u201cmajor\u201d religious traditions to develop a broader landscape of
\nreligious graphic mediums. We encourage submissions that engage Islamic,
\nJewish, Christian, Hindu, Buddhist<\/a>, Native American, African Diaspora
\ntraditions, or other religious communities from a variety of disciplinary
\nor cross-disciplinary perspectives. Such critical approaches may include
\nstudies in religion, literature, theology, art history, culture,
\nanthropology, political science, or other disciplines that work with the
\nmulti-dimensional features of graphic narratives.<\/p>\n
