His point reminded me of the famous scene towards the end of the movie <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0011EQBOS\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B0011EQBOS&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=jamefmcgrshom-20&amp;linkId=W7PWSMMTNB3SKUFP\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>WarGames<\/em><\/a>. And so I wrote, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/2013\/07\/how-to-win-at-bible.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">a post entitled \u201cHow To Win At Bible\u201d<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em style=\"color: #000000\">The only winning move<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0in the clobber verse Bible game is\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"color: #000000\">not to play<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000\">. For even to play the game concedes the rules for Bible reading to be what fundamentalists claim it is: a distortion which prefers select texts removed from their contexts to the deeper comprehension that can only come from treating texts as texts, as wholes, with sensitivity to genre, nuance, and other aspects of communication.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This topic seemed worth revisiting in relation to the current discussions about <a href=\"http:\/\/st-eutychus.com\/2015\/7-ways-christians-lost-the-gay-marriage-battle-and-how-we-should-not-fight-the-war\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">same-sex marriage<\/a>. There are some who think that, if they can just find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/2012\/08\/john-byron-on-the-centurions-slave-and-homosexuality-in-the-new-testament.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">the right verses<\/a> and the right interpretations of them, they can show the anti-gay Christians that they are wrong.<\/p>\n<p>But their wrongness does not stem from\u00a0their having fixated on the wrong verses, or the wrong interpretation of verses. Their wrongness stems from their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/2013\/03\/principles-vs-passages.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">having fixated on verses at all<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/slacktivist\/2015\/02\/02\/slavery-and-the-way-we-read-the-bible-the-picture-is-accurate-but-its-upside-down\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">defenders<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/slacktivist\/2014\/12\/05\/white-evangelical-biblicism-grew-up-defending-slavery-thats-what-its-for\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">slavery<\/a> had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/2015\/06\/fundamentalisms-fundamental-fallacy.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">a firm belief<\/a> in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/slacktivist\/2013\/11\/21\/inerrancy-is-just-round-2-of-the-bible-battle-over-slavery\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">inerrant Bible<\/a>. They had <a href=\"http:\/\/rachelheldevans.com\/blog\/bible-clear\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">careful exegesis<\/a>\u00a0of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2015\/06\/22\/christian-confederate-slavery_n_7638676.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bible<\/a> on their side. They had specific <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/slacktivist\/2014\/07\/09\/whatever-happened-to-the-clobber-texts-for-slavery-unlearning-the-lies-contd\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">passages<\/a>\u00a0lined up.<\/p>\n<p>What they lacked was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/2012\/07\/is-it-good-for-gays-and-lesbians-to-be-alone.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">prioritization of principles<\/a> such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/2008\/02\/the-golden-rule-vs-slavery.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Golden Rule<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If one is convinced that one should do to others as one would wish done to oneself, and one would not wish to be another\u2019s property, then one cannot own another person.<\/p>\n<p>No amount of exegesis should ever be allowed to trump empathy and compassion.<\/p>\n<p>And so I encourage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/2012\/08\/the-distinctive-characteristic-of-liberal-christians.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Christians<\/a> who support marriage equality to take a stand not just <em>for\u00a0<\/em>marriage equality but also\u00a0<em>against<\/em> prooftexting. It is not just an unwinnable game, it is\u00a0<em>designed\u00a0<\/em>to be an unwinnable game, and one that\u00a0serves as a bulwark against the implications of following Jesus and taking the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/2012\/08\/christianity-vs-the-forces-of-darkness.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">core<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/2013\/09\/getting-back-to-biblical-principles.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">principles<\/a> he taught seriously.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of years ago,\u00a0Fred Clark posted about the way playing Bible clobber verses resembles a card game.
