{"id":31486,"date":"2015-08-26T06:32:15","date_gmt":"2015-08-26T10:32:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/exploringourmatrix\/?p=31486"},"modified":"2015-08-26T06:32:15","modified_gmt":"2015-08-26T10:32:15","slug":"false-gospels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2015\/08\/false-gospels.html","title":{"rendered":"False Gospels"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>The sermon last Sunday was about Galatians 1, where Paul talks about the Galatians having turned aside to a different gospel, which is really no gospel at all.<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, those who are the most prone to accuse most of their contemporaries as proclaiming a \u201cfalse gospel\u201d look a lot more like Paul\u2019s opponents than Paul himself.<\/p>\n<p>Paul\u2019s message to the Galatians was not that they were failing to be strict enough, or that they were not maintaining doctrinal purity by adhering to a long list of tenets.<\/p>\n<p>Paul\u2019s message to the Galatians was that they were\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/eerdword.com\/2015\/08\/24\/meet-this-book-paul-and-the-gift-by-john-barclay\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>adding<\/em> requirements<\/a> alongside <a href=\"http:\/\/experimentaltheology.blogspot.com\/2015\/08\/do-we-know-what-it-means-to-be-struck.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">God\u2019s grace<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That isn\u2019t the message you\u2019ll hear from most of today\u2019s fundamentalists. They denounce \u201cfalse gospels\u201d while opposing the very simplicity that Paul\u2019s language about \u201cfalse gospels\u201d was meant to safeguard. To be sure, many of the variety of \u201cgospels\u201d that fundamentalists complain about deserve to be criticized.
