The modern assertion of \u201cbiblical inerrancy\u201d basically boils down to the claim by certain white Christians that \u201cThe Bible says what\u00a0we<\/em>\u00a0say it says, and nothing else, and so you must listen to us as though we were God.\u201d<\/p>\n

The claim \u201cthe Bible is inerrant\u201d can never be separated from the claim \u201cI<\/em>\u00a0can read the Bible perfectly.\u201d\u00a0It\u2019s not primarily about error or errors at all, but about authority. The Bible is the ultimate arbiter of authority. My reading of the Bible is the ultimate arbiter of what the Bible means. Therefore,\u00a0I<\/em>\u00a0am the ultimate arbiter of authority.<\/p>\n

Such a blunt and blatant grab for god-like power may seem a bit crude, but what else would\u00a0you expect from a \u201cdoctrine\u201d that was designed to defend and sanctify the practice of white supremacy, slavery, colonialism and the slaughter of indigenous people?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
