But sometimes we fall into the opposite pitfall and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/religionprof\/2015\/09\/take-the-bible-literally.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">treat things as metaphors when ancient people would have assumed they were statements of literal fact<\/a>. I\u2019ve mentioned the \u201cheart\u201d as one example in the past.<\/p>\n<p>Is \u201cheaven\u201d another?<\/p>\n<p>Keith Reich has been blogging about the spectrum of meanings the word translated as \u201cheaven\u201d has in the Bible. Here are links to <a href=\"http:\/\/keithreich.blogspot.com\/2015\/11\/heaven-spectrum-of-meanings.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">part 1<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/keithreich.blogspot.com\/2015\/11\/heaven-spectrum-of-meanings-ii.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">part 2<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/keithreich.blogspot.com\/2015\/11\/heaven-spectrum-of-meanings-iii.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">part 3<\/a> of that blog series.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t disagree with him that \u201cheaven\u201d meant the region above us skywards and also the place where God dwells. But it seems to me that, as in the case of the heart as the location of human cognition,\u00a0the two meanings overlapped completely, because just as people did not know that the heart is not literally the location where cognition occurs in the human body, so too ancient people did not think that the sky was anything other than literally the place where God dwells.<\/p>\n<p>What do blog readers think?
