The cartoon above came to my attention via Daily Kos<\/a>. Brice Jones recently wrote a blog post<\/a> about Stephen Carlson\u2019s argument regarding the mistranslation \u201cinn\u201d in Luke\u2019s infancy narrative. That in turn builds on the case that Kenneth Bailey<\/a> has made regarding the cultural background of that story.<\/p>\n

On the one hand, the traditional versions of the Christmas stories \u2013 both those in Matthew and Luke \u2013 can be useful in addressing issues like refugees and hospitality. On the other hand, we\u00a0should not make the usefulness of stories in addressing contemporary issues a factor in assessing their historicity.\u00a0Neither Matthew\u2019s story nor Luke\u2019s is likely to include genuine historical information.<\/p>\n

But\u00a0that doesn\u2019t necessarily have to spoil a good cartoon or meme.<\/p>\n
