We began by briefly discussing what historical study can and cannot do, and our tendency to project our interests and values onto Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than follow that with a survey of the New Testament writings relevant to the subject, or the creeds, we began by simply bringing up questions that we hope to look at and to which we are seeking answers. Some of the topics that came up include how Jesus understood himself, whether Jesus shared concepts from his time (such as demons), what Jesus was like growing up and formative influences on his life, <a href=\"http:\/\/exploringourmatrix.blogspot.com\/2007\/09\/jesus-sense-of-humor.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jesus\u2019 sense of humor<\/a> (including the question of whether he ever nailed Peter\u2019s sandal to the floor).<\/p>\n<p>In talking about the childhood of Jesus, I mentioned the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cygnus-study.com\/pageinf.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Infancy Gospel of Thomas<\/a>. I think everyone interested in this topic ought to <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20080127164540\/www.earlychristianwritings.com\/text\/infancythomas-a-roberts.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">read it<\/a>, not because it will give the \u201cinside scoop\u201d about Jesus\u2019 childhood, but because as we react (most likely with horror) to the story it tells, it prods us to ask ourselves, \u201cIf this isn\u2019t how we imagine Jesus\u2019 childhood, then how <i>would<\/i> we imagine it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll resume our study the Sunday after next with an overview of Mark\u2019s Gospel.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/7622297540113836091-7445654561899222942?l=exploringourmatrix.blogspot.com\" alt=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today in Sunday school class we began our series on the person of Jesus.
